Tradition says one person, George W Bonnell, but some recent detailed research points to someone else, Joseph Bonnell. Joseph was born 1802 and died 1840 in Philadelphia and is buried in the Laurel Hill Cemetery. His siblings are Samuel, William (died young), Charles, & Lydia. His parents are Charles & Mary ( Brehault ). Other local names are Bringhurst and Clarkson. He married Anna Elizabeth Noble in Adams County, Mississippi on April 23, 1831. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: cts166 Surnames: Bonnell, Budd, Viets Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bonnell/242.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Warren, It certainly seems likely that Eliza might be related to the loyalist. Eliza was self-reportedly (US census) born in Connecticut abt 1817 and married in 1836 in Digby, so that would be the window that her Dad would have come into Canada. Isaac Bonnell's daughter, Mary Ann, married a fellow named Elisha Budd who was a died-in-the-wool loyalist (coming to Canada in 1783)...so it may have ran in the family. Most of the Viets I found in Connecticut in the early timeframe were farmers but I also know the name got spelled a variety of different ways...I'll see what I can uncover there. I did a bit of digging this afternoon and found a July 20, 1896 article in the Worcester Daily Spy that had some sort of gossip column about the Canadian Provinces - and it mentions A D Bonnell - the wealthy Brooklyn businessman - and how he was pouring thousands of dollars into building a summer home in Nova Scotia. So, his trip with Eliza, and his family in October was probably to check out the finished product. I have notes for burials of a couple of different churches up in NS for various kin...but it is a fairly short list. I have not done anything yet with Canadian cemeteries...the US ones have all been fairly good about inquiries. Thanks, Joann Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Eliza Viets may have been the daughter of the Rev. Roger Viets, who was a Loyalist Anglican priest. Wm. Franklin Bonnell Jr. moved to NB and became the postmaster of Gagetown, Queens County, NB. Eliza might be buried in St. Johns churchyard in Gagetown. I know Anna Maria Collins Bonnell is buried there. WFB Jr's sister Mary Ann Sophia Bonnell Wetmore is buried there; she was 2nd w/o Timothy Robert Wetmore (my GG-GF who is also buried there). Author: cts166 Surnames: Bonnell, Viets Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bonnell/242.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi. Hot dog! You found death info for Eliza! I think I can help you out. Having done a good once over on my family tree, I am just starting to vet my husband's family genealogy, wading through records that my father-in-law left behind after his death. My FIL's mother descends from the Bonnell line. (via William Francis'Bonnell Sr.'s son Isaac Henry Bonnell) According to my records, William Francis Bonnell, Sr. was married to Ann Maria Collins. Their second son was: William Bonnell, Jr. and he was married to a lady named Eliza Viets (b. abt 1817, in Connecticut). In FIL's records, there is a notation that they were married 16 Aug 1836 in Digby (I am guessing Trinity Church). I tried finding Eliza in the US Census but the problem with early stuff, as you well know, is that people were merely headcount under the head's name. So, I have not been able to ID her parents specifically, although perhaps that can be done via Trinity Church records? There were variations on the name as well as a number of "Viets" that make it tough to figure out exactly who her folks are. WF Bonnell, Jr. and Eliza had nine kids. Their third child was named Digby, which made him easy to track! He had Eliza living with him in NYC for awhile. Digby's job appears to have taken him back and forth to Canada via Yarmouth many times a year. I do know for certain that Eliza was alive as of 28 Oct 1896 as Digby took her and his family (Agatha and the kiddies) and one sister back to NS, on what I assume was a visit/vacation/or some such. She is listed in the manifest as 80 years of age, which is totally consistent with an age of 87 in 1903. Sounds like you and I need to compare notes! You can drop me a note offline @ cts@teleport.com I am also happy to do stuff via the Board for everyone's fun and enjoyment! He couldn't be the Daniel who was the son of John Bonnell and Mary Ann Mills, because that Daniel was born about 1776 and would have been only 12 when he was hanged. He was more than likely related to the Georgia Bonnells of the time, since he was hanged in Georgia. And I'm pretty sure now it wasn't Daniel White Bonnell, either. It's a mystery to me!
