    3. The name Vernard was originally given to my grandfather who was born in Wise Co., Virginia in the 1890's. I do not know (but have been searching for) its derivation. I read somewhere that it is the Saxon version of the Germanic Victor. I have noted that there are a number of other Vernard's from this part of the world (SW Virginia, East Tennessee), but none can tell me the name origin. I've always liked it since it's somewhat distinctive (but hate the name Vern) - so I gave it to my oldest boy, Vernard, IV.
