    2. Susan, As you can see by my email, I am searching for the parents of William W. Bond b 1776 who married Margaret Davis in Amherst County, Virginia. I have not heard of the Bond Family History by L D Bond. Where can I buy one? My mother was a Bond so I would be very interested in finding this book. Glad you told me about Isaac. He may be listed in the Deep River Monthly Meeting of the Quakers I have. These are CDs and I will be happy to copy any information and send it to you by snail mail. Anything you can find out for me about the Bonds from your visit will be appreciated very much. I have been chasing this William Bond's parents for ever it seems. I was in Salt Lake City this summer and came up with nothing but then I really did not know where to look except Amherst County, Virginia. I was born in Scott County, Virginia and my husband's people came from Carroll County, Virginia. I stumbled onto Stephen Bond from two of the Hertiage Books of Carroll County, Virginia she mailed him. The world gets smaller every day!! Thanks for your email, Mary Lou FColby@aol.com

    3. Hi Genie: Its been awhile!!! Have you found any more information on Charles Bond's(b. 1712,. Goochland County,VA) wife,.Mary? We know she wasnt a Parks, since Thomas Parks daughter, Mary, married John Bond, not Charles. A Frank Wright seems to think she was an Allen. Allens were mentioned as having lived near Charles Bond. ---------- > From: Hawkholt@aol.com > To: BOND-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: William W. 2. No, I haven't been working on the Parks at all, or Mary Bond. Actually, I haven't had a lot of time to work on this, but I have picked up a few mentions of a Charles Bond and a Jesse Bond in the Washington/Green County area of Tennessee at the Rev. War period. I've also been trying to sort out Walkers. Genie Holt

    3. Hi Gerald Small world is it not. Just by sheer coincidence my 'middle' name happens to be WALKER and further I was born on a 2nd May (not 1874 but 1932) My family line is centred on the UK and does not have any direct connections with those in the USA, so I cannot chip in with any information on your lineage. I do however understand that a Bond Holroyd b.1866 in Marsden, West Yorkshire UK moved to the states. This person could be a relation as mine came from Marsden. I am currently researching my 3xggp JAMES BOND b.1780 Kendal, Westmorland,UK. who became an Independent Minister at Marsden. 3. Here is another bit of correspondence I sent to Nancy Guest regarding the Ballinger/Bond/Wade connections. Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org ---------- From: Glenn Gohr <ggohr01@mail.orion.org> To: jguest <jguest@alltel.net> Subject: Re: Ballenger/Ballinger Connections Date: Wednesday, October 07, 1998 6:56 AM Nancy, I'm glad you got in touch with Imogene Bennett. She lives right here in Springfield, MO where I do. Her husband has a double Wade connection & the Wade name continued down to his mother. Imogene is a great researcher & will only accept FACTS as proof--not hearsay. She believes with me that Elizabeth Bond was a Ballenger before marriage & she has seen all the family intermarriages of the Wades, Ballengers, Boatwrights, Bonds, and others. These families all seemed to have moved in groups from VA to Georgia & elsewhere. Imogene even showed me a map where Little Byrd Creek is and where all these people lived. They did live close. Another hint is a book called: GONE TO GEORGIA: JACKSON AND GWINNETT COUNTIES AND THEIR NEIGHBORS IN THE WESTERN MIGRATION, compiled by William C. Stewart. Washington, D.C.: National Genealogical Society, 1965. Have you seen this book? It covers various people in the GA Census records from these counties and then tries to document their place of origin and family relations. Most references go back into their Virginia roots. Page 256 has a listing for BALLINGER and mentions Joseph and Richard Ballinger living in Amherst Co., VA. Also mentions Joseph Ballinger, widower, marrying Tabitha Ballow/Ballew on April 3, 1782 in Amherst Co. Much more info. is given on other related Ballingers. There is also a listing for the Cash family and for the Bond family. There is much mention of Nathan and Richard Bond and their Rev. War service. It says that Richard Bond "was in the 1783 Amherst tax list, in the same militia company as the Ballingers, Charles Lavender and Bartlett Cash, families later represented in northeast Georgia." If you don't have the book, I can photocopy and send the info. regarding Ballinger, Bond, etc. William C. Stewart also has a similar book on Pendleton District, S.C. which gives similar family biographies, etc. I think our local library has that book also. I'll have to check & see if it has any Ballingers & related families. I also have Dodsons in my family and have a large 2-vol. book on the Dodson family that was done by Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr. who was the head of Southern Historical Press before he died. There are quite a few Dodsons who intermarried with Ballingers in that book. It is well-documented. I can also photocopy from that if you need the information. Let me know your mailing address, and I'll photocopy and mail whatever materials I have that may be helpful. Sincerely, Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org

    3. This was some private e-mail I had with Nancy Guest, but it contains some good information regarding the Bond-Ballinger connections, so I am forwarding this to the Ballinger and the Bond E-Mail lists. Nancy hopes to write an article for the Amherst Co. VA Heritage Book regarding the Ballinger Family. She would like to include Elizabeth (Ballenger) Bond as a daughter if more absolute proof can be found. This is her lineage and also mine. If anyone can assist Nancy on the Ballingers and Bonds, let her know at: jguest@alltel.net I think there is also some question abaout the maiden name of Charles Bond, Sr.'s wife. Earlier on the Bond list someone listed her as Mary Parks, dau. of Thomas Parks, Sr. who died in 1761 in Albemarle Co., VA. He did name a daughter Mary BOND in his will, but is this our Mary Bond? If I remember this Mary Parks was married to a different Bond other than Charles. I keep wondering if her maiden name was Walker instead (see comments below). Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org ---------- From: Glenn Gohr <ggohr01@mail.orion.org> To: jguest <jguest@alltel.net> Subject: Re: Jos. Ballenger, Sr. & Eliz. Ballenger Bond Date: Tuesday, October 06, 1998 2:03 AM Nancy, So glad to hear from you. Yes, I am very much overloaded at this point in time. I am wondering if I ever will get caught up. E-mail is really a great tool, but I think it is the thing that has caused me to be overloaded. But I sure won't give it up! Yes, the age-old question about Nathan Bond's wife, Elizabeth (Ballenger). As you know, Joseph Ballenger, Sr. died and left a will. He names a daughter Elizabeth, but she is named as Elizabeth BALLENGER only. I believe 99% that she is the same Elizabeth that married Nathan Bond, Sr. Joseph Ballenger, Sr. died before Elizabeth would have married Nathan Bond. I've never found a marriage record to show that her maiden name is BALLENGER. All the information I've seen has been circumstantial. I first came across this connection through the book, NOTES ON CHARLES BOND, SR. AND HIS DESCENDANTS FROM 1733 by Catherine Sams Bond Gheesling, 1975. Charlotte Collins Bond sent me a photocopy of this book in 1980 or 1981 when I first moved to Springfield, MO from Texas. She has been a wonderful help to me in researching the various families that we share ancestors on. I understand that Catherine Gheesling (Mrs. Frank A.) is still living, so possibly she has found further information. Using WhoWhere I find this address: Frank A Gheesling     Phone : 770-977-9390 3640 Asbury, Marietta GA 30062-4151 Anyway, in her book, on page 3 she lists Nathan Bond Sr.'s wife as Elizabeth ________ & says "She was possibly the Elizabeth Ballenger listed as a daughter in the 1744 will of Joseph Ballenger of Goochland Co., Va." Source given is Goochland Co., Va., Will Book 4, p. 495. That will (found on page 396 of the Ballinger book) also mentions Richard and Joseph Ballenger (Jr.) who are found in Albemarle & Amherst County records. From my understanding it was Joseph Ballenger, Jr. who was a Reverend and married various ones of the relatives; Emma Reeves also lists Joseph, Sr. as a minister with the Church of England. >From the Reeves book, THREE CENTURIES ... on pages 2-3, Joseph Ballinger & Charity Wade are listed as parents of a daughter Elizabeth, b. 1729 in Maryland. (I am curious as to where they found that year of birth for her, as the other siblings shown do not have birth years given--at least not on page 3) and sons Richard & Joseph & 4 other daughters. Page 8 lists Joseph Jr. as a minister with the Church of England. >From the listings on p. 7-8, it appears that Elizabeth was born in between Richard and Joseph, Jr. in birth order. It seems more likely to me that she was born in Virginia, rather than Maryland as both Richard & Joseph Jr. were born in VA. p. 411 mentions that Nathan Bond of Amherst Co., leaves land to his four children: Joseph Ballenger Bond, Richard Cox Bond, Mary Walker Kelly/Hilley, and Nathan Bond. This is Jan. 3, 1782 in Deed Book E, p. 346. This was witnessed by Joseph Ballinger. A witness is often a close relative. It seems likely that Joseph Ballinger, Jr. was Elizabeth Bond's brother. Also Nathan & Elizabeth had a son named Joseph Ballenger Bond. It seems probable that he was named after his uncle & his grandfather. Another thought also has come to mind many times, but I've not been able to check on this. If you notice, Nathan & Elizabeth Bond's children all have double names. This is rather early in history to be giving out middle names to each of the children. And the middle names all sound like family surnames. I've always felt like they must be named after relatives. We have Joseph Ballenger Bond (named after his grandfather Joseph Ballenger Sr. & Jr.) Richard Cox Bond Nathan Bond, Jr. (named after his father) Mary Walker Bond (possibly named after her grandmother Bond?) I wonder if Nathan Bond's mother was Mary (Walker) Bond?? wife of Charles Bond, Sr. On the Bond E-Mail list someone had suggested that her name was Mary PARKS, daughter of Thomas Parks, Sr. who died in 1761 in Albemarle Co., VA & left a will naming a daughter, Mary BOND. But then later someone said that the Mary BOND, daughter of Thomas Parks, Sr. was married to a different Bond other than Charles. So maybe her maiden name was Walker? Now I wonder where the Richard Cox Bond name came from. Are there Coxes back in the family lineage or those who intermarried with the Bonds? Is there a Richard Cox who is an ancestor or close relative? Richard Cox Bond, Sr. (my ancestor) married Susannah Mays on May 15, 1783 in Amherst Co., VA. They were married by Rev. Joseph Ballenger, Jr. (see Bond book p. 16). Nathan Bond, Jr. also married Edith Cash on Oct. 21, 1784 in Amherst Co., VA with Rev. Joseph Ballenger, Jr. performing the ceremony (Bond book p. 18). Some more thoughts: Apparently the Bonds and Ballingers were close neighbors in Goochland Co. I have these references to them both living on Little Bird Creek and having mutual neighbors: Goochland Co. Deed Book 2, p. ?, 11 Feb. 1735: Charles BOND of Goochland Co & Mary his wife to William Johnson of Middlesex Co, for 17 lbs, 250 acres on LittleBird Creek bounded by Robert Horsely. Wit: James Gorge, Joseph Pace, Thomas Brackett Signed: Charles (C) Bond, Mary (M) Bond Recorded: 20 Apri 1736 Goochland Co. Deed Book 3, p. 30, 5 Oct. 1736: William Mattock of Goochland Co, and Catherine, his wife, to Robert Bruce of same, for 10 lbs, 95 acres on northo side of James River, next to said Bruce and Mattock, Robert Horsley, Little Byrd Creek and Joseph Ballenger. Wit: James George, Samuel (X Burk, Timothy (X) Lee Signed: William Mattock, Catherine (X) Mattock Recorded: 17 May 1737 The Wade family also lived near the James River and Little Byrd Creek. I find the Wades and Ballingers all living near the Bond family in GA, so I believe all these families are related. Also, I should mention that I am a member of the Sons of the Am. Revolution and have 13 proven Rev. ancestors who either fought in the Am. Revolution or assisted the cause in some way. Two of these are Richard Cox Bond, Sr. & Nathan Bond, Sr. On my application to SAR, I included Nathan Bond Sr.'s wife as Elizabeth Ballinger, and they accepted that. Of course they mostly wanted proof of the soldier/patriot's service & the lineal descent down. They may not have worried too much about proving the surname of the wife. I don't know of anyone going into DAR under these two patriots. I got my information from the Bond book. I'd love to know the name & page of the old book in the Athens (GA) Regional Library Heritage Room that said "Nathan Bond's wife was the daughter of old Preacher Ballenger of Amherst County, VA." Since the Ballingers were Quakers & there were lots of Quakers in New Jersey in that area where they lived, I wonder if there might be a Quaker marriage bond that has been overlooked for Elizabeth Ballinger & Nathan Bond, Sr. I'm mostly rambling & going round in circles, but maybe something here will give you more leads. I still don't have proof positive that Elizabeth Bond's maiden name was Ballinger. Oh yes, I do have an actual photostatic copy of the handwritten will of Joseph Ballenger, Sr. which was probated in Goochland County, VA in 1744. I obtained it from the Circuit Court Clerk there about 15 years ago. Hope this helps. I do NOT have any time to write an article on the Ballengers, so you go ahead if you want to. It sounds like a worthy project. Best Regards, Glenn Gohr (Ballinger List Manager; also former Bond & Wade List Manager on Rootsweb) ggohr01@mail.orion.org ---------- From: jguest <jguest@alltel.net> To: ggohr01@mail.orion.org Subject: Jos. Ballenger, Sr. & Eliz. Ballenger Bond Date: Monday, October 05, 1998 1:16 PM FROM: Nancy Guest, des. from Nathan Bond 's dau. Mary Walker Bond Hilley RE: Jos. Ballenger, Sr. and Elizabeth Ballenger Bond Dear Glenn, I know you are overloaded, but I need to know if you have any actual documentation that Elizabeth Ballenger, wife of Nathan Bond, was the daughter of Joseph Ballenger, Sr. of Amherst County, VA. I wrote an article for the Amherst Co. VA Heritage Book on Nathan Bond's family with the able assistance of Charlotte Collins Bond; I wrote another on Thomas Hilley, Sr.'s family with assistance from Chandler Eavenson. THEN I got a letter from one of the committee members asking me to write an article on Jos. Ballenger, Sr. Although I have spoken to Mrs. Reeves and received permission to use her book as a source (she also agreed to have her name on the piece if she liked it), I don't feel as confident about the Ballengers as the Bonds and Hilleys. I do own the Reeves book and I have a willing heart (if a somewhat frazzled brain). If I could know for dead sure that I am descended from Joseph Ballenger, Sr. I would do this article -- the Ballengers were certainly prominent in early Amherst County and should be included in their book I did say in the Bond piece that she was his daughter, but the only thing I have ever seen is a comment in an old book in the Athens (GA) Regional Library Heritage Room that "Nathan Bond's wife was the daughter of old Preacher Ballenger of Amherst County, VA." That should be enough, but I CAN'T FIND IT AGAIN. Their copier was down the day I found it -- I should have written down the name of the book, alas! You are much more qualified than I to write this piece, and if you want to do it, just say the word. By the way, I talked to Charlotte Bond today, and she said to say hello (I wish she had E-mail). Sorry for the length of this query. Thank you, Nancy Guest at jguest@alltel.net

I just learned of William this week. I knew Asa lived with Isaac in the 1850 census of Floyd Co, but knew he could be his son due to the age difference. William was killed in 1849. That's why I could never find him. I live near the Stephen Bond homeplace in Carroll Co. A descendent of Benj. Still lives there. I plan to go there Monday. He has alot of Bond and we plan to compare notes. My notes are in the car right now so I can't give you more, but I will later. Any other info that you have on these Bond's, I would greatly appreciate. Are you familiar with the new book by LD Bond on the Bond Family History??? More Later, Susan

We have an LDS Family History Center here. I have not heard of this but will try to order it from Salt Lake to take a look. I did just receive the The Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy 1750-1930 CD #192 from Bouderbund. As usual they always list an early year and then have only a couple of listings for that year. Haven't found the Bonds I am looking for in that but may need to take a closer look. Just like a needle in a haystack, sometimes things can be overlooked. The information I have: Charles Bond b abt. 1712 married in 1734 in Goochland County, Virginia to Mary Parks (dau. of Thomas Parks.) Charles Bond died in 1774 in Surry County, N.C. Children: Jessee, Nathan, Charles Jr., John, Mary, William, and Thomas Bond. (One of the children of Charles might be William Bond's b 1776 father but then who is the father of Charles and so it goes.) Jesse Bond b abt 1750 in Albermarle County, Virginia and died 1781 killed by Indians in Washington County, KY; married Mildred Crane in 1776. (I have a Walton listed as his wife also. Was he married twice?) Children listed: Nathan, Walton, Lucy, Jesse Walton, William Thomas Bond b Sept 25, 1766 and John Bond. Bear with me for the rest of this email, it may get very complicated. Edward Bond b Feb 16, 1621 married Mary Moore. Their son was Benjamin Bond b Feb 20, 1686 who married Ann Paradise (father: John Paradise.) Benjamin Bond had a son Joseph Bond who was born in Pennsylvania. He married in 1739 in Pennsylvania Martha Rogers. Joseph Bond died abt. 1760 in New Garden; Guilford County, N.C. Children of Joseph Bond and Martha Rogers were: 1. Edward Bond b Sept 26, 1740 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania; married August 16, 1764 in Guilford County, N.C. to Ann Elizabeth Mills. He died May 6, 1821. They were Quakers while in N.C. their son William was born Nov 16, 1771. (So I can rule this William out.) Children of Edward Bond were: Benjamin, Keziah, John, Edward, Anne, Jessee, Joshua & Joseph. (This information comes from the Quaker Meetings CD.) 2. Benjamin Bond born 1742 (I have nothing else on this one.) 3. Ruth Bond born 1744-45 4. Stephen Bond born 1750 married a Maiden. They were Quakers and members of Deep River Monthly Meetings in Guilford County, N.C. Two children listed for this couple. Must be twins: Benjamin and Rebecca b June 31, 1788. This couple ended up in Carroll County, Virginia. 5. Ann Bond 6. Samuel Bond b Dec 2, 1753. He moved with his family to Surry County, N.C. and they were also members of Deep River Monthly Meetings for the Quakers. 7. John Bond b May 30, 1755 in Bucks County, PA. Married Jane Beeson January 26, 1778 in Guilford County, N.C. John Bond died 1795 in Knoxville, Tennessee. This couple had a William Bond b Dec. 5, 1789. (This one is out.) I have elimated Joseph Ballenger Bond b May 17, 1756 as William Wellington Bond's father. Joseph's son William was born in 1779 and married Elizabeth Ramsy. That leaves me with Stephen or Samuel or another name from the Amherst area that I have overlook. I do feel that I am getting closer to solving this puzzle because some of the pieces are beginning to fit. All of the other descendants are falling into place but with William it is taking a much longer time. After William Wellington (not sure of this middle name, either) Bond and Margaret Davis were married, they moved to Russell County, Virginia (now Scott County) in 1810. He was sordained a deacon at the Cooper Creek Regular Baptist Church on April 6, 1814. I have all the information from there to my present descendants. You probably have this but from Goochland County, Virginia Book #15 Virginia Land Records page 44: Charles Bond in 1733 had 250 acres in Goochland County, Virginia. Please send me what you have for correction ( I am never sure if my information is correct and I always like to double check) and missing pieces if you have any. Thanks once again, Mary Lou FColby@aol.com --part0_907976881_boundary--

    1. Re: Jesse Bond/The Watauga Purchase
    2. At the library last week I found "The Watauga Purchase at Sycamore Shoals, March 19, 1775: An Index." The index lists Jesse Bond on pages 99, 101, and 102. It also makes reference to "Bond's Old Claim, page 480." Does anyone out there in the Bond family have any of the original of "The Watauga Purchase" or know where I might find this? This index also lists Charles Bound. I have on occasion seen the Bond name spelled this way, probably due to the reader being unable to distinguish the u and n. Genie Holt

    1. Re: William W. Bond born 1776
    2. Most of my Bond family are from Goochland and Amherst County, VA. I assume you've seen "Notes on Charles Bond, Sr. and his descendants, from 1733." This is on Microfiche 6049018 with the LDS library. I don't have a complete copy, but I suspect that your William W. may belong to Joseph Ballenger Bond or Nathaniel Bond. Many of these people moved to North Carolina and then to Georgia. The author of this book is Catherine Sams Bond Cheesling, from Atlanta, GA. Nathaniel Bond and his son, Nathan were in Amherst County in 1776 where they enlisted with the First Rifle Company. In 1788 Nathan Bond, Sr. was in Wilkes County, Ga. A brother of Nathan Bond, Sr. was William Bond (Billy). This William left no will or estate, and may have been deceased at the time of his father's, Charles', death in 1774. Charles Bond, Sr. named William Bond's sons in his will. If you have this information please let me know. If not, I'll send more of what I have. I am descended from Charles, Sr., through his son, Jesse, brother of William. We have numerous William W.'s in our family. I think the only instance I have found of the second name being spelled out is a William Wallace Bond. Do you happen to know the middle initial of your W? The Walkers seemed to have intermarried with the Bond family a lot, and the middle name may be Walker. I've done a lot of work on these folks in Goochland, Albemarle, and Amherst Counties and will be glad to share. I also need to do a lot more work! Genie Holt, Tucson

    2. Searching for William W. Bond born 1776 in Amherst County, Virginia married Margaret Davis December 9, 1793 in Amherst County, Virginia. fMargaret was daug. of David Davis and Elizabeth ____________. Does anyone have a list of Bonds in an around Amherst County, Virginia during this time period that might be William Bond's parents? I have checked the Quaker Records and everywhere I can think of and still nothing. Any lead will be appreciated. I have lots of Bonds to share, most of them are just not mine. Thanks in advance, Mary Lou FColby@aol.com

    3. Looking for the parents of my GGgrandfather, THOMAS BONDS, born in GA (unknown date and county, possibly Gwinnette). Thomas married ELIZABETH LOIN of Alabama. Their children include: Lum Monroe b. AL in 1863 Hilary (birthdate unknown) Thursday " Emma " These four children moved to Vian, Oklahoma in the 1890s. I am wondering if Thomas Bonds, son of Dudley Bonds, JR, of Gwinnette Co., GA, could be my ancestor.
