    1. [BOHN-L] August Martin Bohn
    2. Grover D. Anderson
    3. Nancy Sorry for the confusion on the date of death. It should have been 1950 and has been corrected below. The birth date of 1867 was from his own personal records although I have one record that shows 1868. In either case this would have him arriving in the states around 1883-1887. I have checked the German Imigrants to America books for the 1880 to 1890 and did not find a record of him. There were other August Bohns during that time frame. I have seen the Bohns in Iowa that you reference but have no evidence that they were related. The only other clue I have are the letters in the 1920's and 1930's. In addition to the letters from his brother Julius, there were one or two from his nephew, Rudolf. The letters at that time came from Danzig. Sorry for the errors in the original note. I was anxious to hear, once I found out there was a Bohn correspondence group. Thanks for your help. Grover Anderson I am new to the list and looking for information on August Martin Bohn, b January 31, 1867 in Mossien, Germany, d May 18, 1950 Wichita Falls, Texas. A. M. Bohn came to this country when he was about 16 or 17 landing in New York with his uncle John. They located in or near Springfield, Missouri. A. M. later moved to Indian Territory finally moving to Addington, Oklahoma where he lived out his life. I have information on his descendants but no information on his parents or other ancestors. I know he had one brother named Julius whom he corresponded with in the 1920's and 1930's. I also know that his uncle John had a daughter named Minnie. Any information would be appreciated. 3. > Looking for info about Elmira or Almira (I have seen other spellings > also) Bohn, born 5/28/1822 in Hesse Damstersen, Germany Make the Country (!) read Hessen-Darmstadt (that is the German spelling), or Hesse-Darmstadt (if you prefer the English spelling). The full name of this country was "Grand Duchy of Hessen at Darmstadt". There only was one Grand Duchy of Hessen. But before it was a Grand Duchy, it was a Landgra- viate. And it had TWO "Landgraviates of Hessen", one with the capitol being Darmstadt, the other having Kassel as the capitol. While the Hessen-Kassel landgraviate became an Electorate, Hessen_Darmstadt became a Grand Duchy. Well there were other Hessens, like the "Principality of Hessen", with Homburg being the capital. The smaller a place was as a country, the longer its formal name, and the more likely the name was abbreviated. With Hessen-Homberg no territory was big enough to print the full name. Actually its terrotories were marked H.H., as there was just not enough space for more than three letters. But that's a different story, and just added causis colorandis, so that you would understand, that "Hesse Darmstadt" is acceptable, but that you better add that hyphen to make clear, that "Hesse Darmstadt" was the name of the country, and not the name of a place in a country. Other than that: The Bohn name is pretty frequent in the city of Darmstadt and way down south in the villages. I went to high school with a Bohn, whose father later was killed in bank robbe- ry (he was the manager). The wooden garden fence at my parents' house was made by a company "Bohn - Roofs and Fences" ... The name is really common. I guess, you should obtain some idea about the name's distribution over Germany by going on the World Wide Web to http://www.genealogy.com/. Manoeuver to the German Genealogy FAQs. Not only are two out of all questions you ever will have already answered in there, there is also some information on the German Phonebook Servers, and on a special interface, that just gives you a frequency distribution over the postal zones. And to know, what that distribution actually means, you also should find a gif with postal zone map of Germany there. > She was supposed to have come from Germany with her parents when she was > 10 years old, so approx. 1832. Germany was just an idea in 1832. It only was founded in 1871. So, your ancestress came from a place, which today is located in Germany, but which at that time was not, because in those times, "Germany" did not formally exist, but was just a generic reference to an area in Europe, where people spoke German. The Hessians kept meticulous records about their emmigrants. Big index card files, and since over twenty years, the Hessian State Archives are in the process of transferring the paper records onto the computer. NO, those data are not available via internet. Some twenty years ago, several books "Hessische Auswandererlisten" were published. Those books only give a snapshot of what was on the computer, not what was in the paper records. They are still working on transferring to the com- puter, so this might give you an idea, what a vast collection of info that is. It possibly might be a good idea, to check with on-line library catalogues for "Hessische Auswanderer" and for "Hesaus", which is just the acronym. If lucky, you find your ancestress in the volume for Hessen-Darmstadt. If less lucky, you need to write a letter to Hessisches Staatsarchiv Darmstadt z.H. HESAUS II Projektgruppe Karolinenplatz 64219 Darmstadt Germany What is the "Hessisches Staatsarchiv Darmstadt"? It is one of several State Archives of the modern German state of HESSEN. This state is composed from several, formerly independant and souvereign countries, all of which had been "Hesen" in one way of another. The state archives, which are the repository for the former FGrand Duchy are located in Darmstadt. They have the paper records of Hessen-Darmstadt emmigrants. What is "z.H. HESAUS II Projektgruppe" in this address? "z.H." means "Attn:". HESAUS II (two)is the computer data base of emigrants, the paper files are dubbed HESAUS I (one). When you ask the people who deal which the computer, it will take them seconds to find your person, if she alreadyis on the computer. If not, they will forward the query zto the Hesaus I people, who then will go through their paper records. What is "Karolinenplatz" in this address? It is the street address. I don't have the number, but then the Karoli- nenplatz is so small, that there arer less than 10 postal addresses there. Your letter will be delivered. Even if you left out the street address, it would reach its destination. After all, it is a State Ar- chive... If your ancestor is on the HESAUS II computer, expect a reply after four weeks. If not, then she is in the paper records, and you should expect a reply after some two or three months. It is always in good style to add some return postage and a token of goodwill towards their research fees. Adding a ten dollar bill to your query certainly is not a mistake. Do not send American personal checks. To clear an American check come with bank fees, that are around 25 dollars per check. I hope, this helps. Sorry for some typoes, I see them, but I am too lazy to correct them. Siegfried PS: I grew up nine miles south of the city of Darmstadt, but I do not live there anymore. So, these bits and poeces of info are all I can help you with
