Hi, I would be interested hearing from anybody, that has done research in Germany. What to do, How to do it. Who I would need to contact. I am from the line of Johann Nicholas Bohn. b. 1731-1732. There are so many Johann NIchola's Bohn out there. I have his will and his probate. It says he is from GermanyI have not been able to find his immigration, either. His father is Valentin Bohn. Any information would be helpful. Thank you, Marion F. Bohn Sperry.

I am looking for information on a Mr. Bohn who was killed in the Civil War. He was married to Lizabeth Hansberry, b April 22, 1839 in Ohio. They had three children: Frank, Mont and Mary Elizabeth, b 1857 in Wisconsin. The only info I had about Mr. Bohn's birthplace was Holland, (shown on daughter, Mary Elizabeth's death certificate) but do not know if that is correct. Lizabeth Hansberry remarried after Mr. Bohn's death to a Mr. Pyle. Mary Elizabeth Bohn married Eli Marion Ellison in Nebraska in 1874. Any information will be appreciated. Phyllis Carson
Gottlieb Bohn married Elizabeth Ganstz and had a daughter Hanna Henriette b. 26 Feb 1817 D. 15 Jan 1885. b. in Sophiadam Germany. She married Martin Warnike in Brostowa and they had a daughter Ernestina b. 20 Dec 1845 . Ernestina came to US in 1864 with her brother and she married Joseph Pulaski in 1865 in New Buffalo, MI. There are many many Bohns in Sophiadam. Would like to connect with someone else with the same family. Bev

Thanks for the Roll Call. Yes, this is a very quiet list, and it has been since it began a couple of years ago. Once in a while, we have some interesting posts, however. We now have nearly 100 subscribers. My earliest BOHN connection is probably Philip Jacob BOHN, b. abt 1732, maybe in Germany. Not verified to my satisfaction yet. He died probably about 1780. He married (before he died, of course) Maria Elizabeth in York County, PA. Their children were Catharina b. 1757 Johann Valentine, b. abt 1759, d. 1814, md. Catherine Hollinger (my line) Anna Maria, b. Aug 31, 1763 Johann Peter, b. Oct 10, 1763 Yes, I know the last two birthdays are odd. They are unconfirmed. I feel more comfortable with the dates for my direct line, although I would love more concrete data. I'm against a brick wall in trying to verify where they came from. I *think* that Philip Jacob was the emigrant. His children were born in York County, PA, and my Johann Valentine was a member of Christ Lutheran. My BOHN ancestor is Elmira Bohn, from Hessen-Darmstadt (part of what became Germany), born 5/28/1822, emigrated to New York when she was about 10 with her parents, married John SHANNON there, they eventually settled and farmed near Nashua (north central) IA. She died 4/3/1896 and I think is buried in Oakhill Cemetery outside of Nashua. The family story about her was that she was very heavy, like 300 pounds and got her arm stuck in a cream can one time. I have a little bit more info about her, but can't lay my hands on it right now. Denise

I believe Bohn means "bean" in German, though it may have other meanings as well. No one ever told me anything about its origins, but I supposed it might have been a reference to some "beanlike" physical characteristic of the person originally given the name. I have traced my own Bohn ancestors to Leonhard Bohn (no dates), father of Johann Michael Bohn (b. August 21, 1778 in Jungholzhausen, m. Johanna Reuss), father of Johann Georg Christan Bohn (b. 1838 in Kuenzelsau, m. Maria Egner, d.. 1913). J.G.C.Bohn remained in Germany, but his wife and 3 surviving children emigrated to America. Kunzelsau is near Stuttgart. This was the only case where I succeeded in tracing any of my ancestors back to their European origins, because my grandmother was the only one of my living relatives who remembered that her mother (the youngest child of J.G.C.Bohn) had told her the name of her town, Kunzelsau. I remember hearing that the Bohn name originated somewhere in Germany, perhaps around the City of Bonn. Can anyone confirm this?? Also, any information about 4 brothers (one named Orion ) and a sister from Bonn, Germany that changed his name to Bohn after arriving here would be helpful. Many thanks for any help given Scott Bohn Scott.Bohn@boeing.com
