Hello My dad was a coal miner and he wore a hat from his teen age years until he died in 74. A majority of the miners did were hats. Not just for the keeping the sun off. My dad felt that he wasn't fully dressed without his hat. I would say that farmers also wore hats to shade the sun in the hot weather. Dads hat was worn year round and not just on holidays or special occasions. Elva
