Here they bought 400 acres on the main waters of Caines Creek, where he built his cabin near the mouth of Kirby Branch and is said to have been one of the first white families to settle in that eastern part of KY. He was listed in the first tax list, March 10, 1822 of Lawrence Co., KY [part that was formerly a part of Floyd Co., KY].(Emory Hamilton) Caine's Creek was named after the Rev.War soldier, Richard Caines, the first settler on the creek, whose granddaughter, Mahalla Griffith married the son of Hugh and Hannah Blevins, John "Puny" Boggs. Ky. In an earlier version of the book, Virgil listed Hugh's wife as Sally Lewis (p. 18). In the later book he corrected this. He lists Hugh and Elizabeth's children as: Rachel, Mary, John M. , Rebecca, James, Nancy, Hugh, and Elizabeth. He lived 1st at the mouth of Calhoun Creek in Wise County VA. Later he moved to the headwaters of Cumberland River in KY., settling above the mouth of Franks Creek. In his old age, he would sit on his front porch and read his Bible. He died the day of the "great sun eclipse". Tradition has it that Eli was implicated in the murder of Alexander Goins, a melungoen person. The 1850 census of Carter Co., KY, Dist 1 #285, lists Temperance McGuire, age 52 born NC. James owned one male slave and three female slaves. Several of his children married into the Boggs family. 19.
