Here they bought 400 acres on the main waters of Caines Creek, where he built his cabin near the mouth of Kirby Branch and is said to have been one of the first white families to settle in that eastern part of KY. He was listed in the first tax list, March 10, 1822 of Lawrence Co., KY [part that was formerly a part of Floyd Co., KY].(Emory Hamilton) Caine's Creek was named after the Rev.War soldier, Richard Caines, the first settler on the creek, whose granddaughter, Mahalla Griffith married the son of Hugh and Hannah Blevins, John "Puny" Boggs. Tradition has it that Eli was implicated in the murder of Alexander Goins, a melungoen person.
