Robert Cunningham has added 2 more pictures to the Boggs Family Album on Photopoint: 1. Richard Caines is the man after whom Caines Creek was named. He was the first white man who settled into that area of Eastern Kentucky. He is an ancestor of many Boggs, too. The marker is in the Griffith family cemetery on Caines Creek. The photo was provided by David Church in Ohio. 2. John O. Boggs was the father of Hugh Boggs and son of James L. Boggs. John, married to Nancy Wells, came to Lawrence County, Kentucky prior to his father's arrival. The marker is in the Nelse Rice Cemetery (sometimes called Gambill Rice Cemetery) in Martha, Kentucky, where many Boggs and extended family members are buried, including James L. Boggs. If anyone else has photos to add to the album, the scanned pictures can be sent to me as an email attachment - JPEG format seems to work best. There have been 3,563 hits on the album - what a great way to share our pictures with each other. This Photopoint album has been linked to the Ancient Faces website. Be sure to check it out too. Sorry, I meant for that last post to go to a particular person and not the list, sorry. Edward
Where in Ohio? I live in Dayton. Edward
I have been off the list for awhile, due to my sometime kick-in of chronic fatigue, Nancy. thanxx...Edward
Nancy, the info may be correct about her being born in Ireland, so I do not want to mislead anyone by claiming to know more than another....I am just theorizing. My line is through Isaac Boggs, son of Eli or Eley back to James L and John also. Edward
Dear List Members, Just had too much time on my hands again. John Andrew Boggs From: RSmith750@aol.com To: RSmith750@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, November 14, 2000 9:39 PM Subject: Geneology Genealogy Quips My family coat of arms ties at the back ... is that normal? My family tree is a few branches short! All help appreciated. My ancestors must be in a witness protection program! Shake your family tree and watch the nuts fall! My hobby is genealogy, I raise dust bunnies as pets. How can one ancestor cause so much TROUBLE?! I looked into my family tree and found out I was a sap ... I'm not stuck, I'm ancestrally challenged. I'm searching for myself; Have you seen me? If only people came with pull-down menus and on-line help ... Isn't genealogy fun? The answer to one problem leads to two more! It's 2000 ... Do you know where your G-G-Grandparents are? A family tree can wither if nobody tends it's roots. A new cousin a day keeps the boredom away. After 30 days unclaimed ancestors will be adopted. Am I the only person up my tree ... sure seems like it. Any family tree produces some lemons, some nuts, and a few bad apples. FLOOR: The place for storing your priceless genealogy records. Gene-Allergy: It's a contagious disease but I love it. Genealogists are time unravelers. Genealogy is like playing hide and seek: They hide ... I seek! Genealogy: Tracing yourself back to better people. A pack rat is hard to live with but makes a fine ancestor. I want to find ALL of them! So far I only have a few thousand. I Should have asked them BEFORE they died! I think my ancestors had several "Bad heir" days. Only a Genealogist regards a step backwards, as progress. Share your knowledge, it is a way to achieve immortality. Many a family tree needs pruning. Shh! Be very, very quiet ... I'm hunting forebears. Snobs talk as if they had begotten their own ancestors! That's strange: half my ancestors are WOMEN! Genealogists live in the past lane. Documentation ...The hardest part of genealogy. Genealogy: Chasing your own tale! Genealogy ... will I ever find time to mow the lawn again? I researched my family tree ... and apparently I don't exist!
Hi: Thanks for quick reply. A lot of Boggs are Cherokee. I am finding it more and more and I was always told that my gggggrandfather was full blooded Cherokee Indian Chief. I just haven't come up with it yet. My grandmother, Finley Marlowe was also of Cherokee so I don't know. Family came from NC-KY-OH and who knows where else. I keep checking and have hit a brick wall at this time on both Boggs and Marlowe. Charles lived in Preble County, OH when Allie was born in 1880, but can't find him after that as of now. Thanks for anything you coud send me on the Boggs line. Would be most appreciated. We live in OH. Take care, Nancy J. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hi Edward: I don't believe I have talked with you before, but not really positive. Anyway my grandmother was Cora Margaret Boggs, daughter of Charles and Isadoa Boggs. She had a sister, Allie Boggs, married to John Henry Binion. Cora was married to Finley Marlowe. Father o Charles was Tyree T. Boggs, born 1833, ee VA, His father was James Pamer Boggs, 1-1810, Lee, Va., his father was Hugh Boggs, 1781 Wilkes, NC, his father James L. Boggs, 1752 and his father John Boggs, abt. 1725 and his father Joseph. The one thing I found ont he internet shows Mary Keys in born in Ireland. If you have any information you could share with me it sure would be appreciated. I have not been doing this very long and am trying to get as much information as I can on my grandmothers family. Thanks. Nancy J. Marlowe McDowell, OH __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Shopping - Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. http://shopping.yahoo.com/
Just pondering about Mary Keys birthplace and why no one seems to know for certain...it is pre-supposed Ireland or N.C. (since she lived in N.C., this would be a good possibility) Ireland is always listed with a ? when mentioning her birthplace. (although I do find the surname Keys in Scotland.) Again, I am just theorizing, not to ruffle any feathers, but to be open to the possibility of Mary Keys being Cherokee.(here we go again, I hear some saying...: ) There were then and still are Cherokee with that surname. Very often the Scots (Scots-Irish) immigrants took native wives after arriving to this continent. I talked further with my father at more length and he says that both our Boggs line and Witt line (his mother's maiden name) have Cherokee blood. North Carolina was Cherokee land at that time. Edward Again, I left for awhile due to my chronic fatigue...if case anyone wants to know why I pop in and out once in a while.
More pictures have been added to the Boggs Family Album on Photopoint. They include: A house that was built originally by Detroit Burton about 1850 and was sold to Henderson Boggs when Detroit left the area a few years later. It has been in the Boggs family ever since and was recently purchased by a great-grandson of Henderson. There are also pictures of the original barn and shed that was constructed from hand hewn logs that still show the ax marks. These pictures were taken by Bob Cunningham when he was there in September 2000. The house is on the right fork of Caines Creek, not far from the Baptist Church where the Boggs family reunion is held. Bob also sent pictures of a one-room school on Caines Creek where his grandfather, Harry Boggs, taught for several years around the turn of the century. There is also a picture of the old farm house where the family lived. It was directly across the creek from the school. Harry Boggs taught school there for about 13 years before the family left for the Portsmouth, Ohio area about 1920. At the time he taught, he was paid 21 dollars a month and had to bring his own coal for the stove used to heat the school. The school had grades 1 - 8. The 2 men in the pictures are Bob's uncles, Hubert & Luther Boggs. We don't know the date the pictures were taken, but not later than the 1950's. The school burned about 30-40 years ago and today there is nothing left but the steps. The farm house has been replaced with a more modern structure. Bob, thanks for sharing these wonderful pictures with all of us. If anyone else has pictures they would like to add to the album, please contact me. New pictures of grave markers for the Boggs family have been added to the Boggs Family Album on Photopoint. These are pictures that were taken by Robert Cunningham when he visited Kentucky last month. Bob told me that many of the grave sites are at the Henderson Boggs Cemetery, on the right fork of Caines Creek, outside of Blaine. All are in private cemeteries on what had been family farms. The Henderson Boggs cemetery is the only one marked at the road and all are along Caines Creek, right and left fork. I'm looking for some help regarding my ggg-grandfather, Alexander Boggs, who was born in 1774, married Magdalena Schaefer, and died in 1855 in Wayne Co., IN. I'm trying to find some definite information about Alexander's parents; different web site databases seem to be giving me conflicting information on his parents. Any help would be appreciated. Alan
