His parents migrated to Madison Co., AL when he was 12 or 13 years old. On 15 Nov 1813 he volunteered and served as private in the Company commanded by Capt. Perhaps, after all, from what I have found...there may be two distinct Boggs lines....the Scot/Irish from Delaware, Penn. and then the Indian Boggs (Bogka) Line. Edward

Dear List, Besides Gary Haupe & Robert Birchard, is there anyone doing research on or have an interest in: The John McKinley-Martha (Oliver) Boggs Line? Is the County & Town of Margues, TX correct in spelling or is it Marquez. I have it both ways, for Town of, County of & Cemetery of; Help!! I would like to exchange data on this line. I am somewhat confused on the relationship of the wives of Kit Carson & Thomas Oliver Boggs son of Lilburn W. & Juliannah (Bent) Boggs. One source has them sisters & another has them as Aunt & Niece. I believe them as Aunt & Niece. Some data has T. O. Boggs & Kit as brothers-in-law, adding to my confusion. Regards, John Andrew Boggs
John O. Boggs is on the tax list of McMinn County, 1829-1832 and 1836. This is where John Boggs is listed on the Henderson Rolls of Cherokee in McMinn County, which was Indian Territory.
For those of you who requested this info on Boggs/Musgrove. (All of this has been documented) History of the Boggs Family: About 300 years ago, ca 1694, John Boggs, full blooded Cherokee, was born, Paentage unknown. He married (Polly) ca 1713, her parentage unknown. One of their children, a son, John Dave Boggs, born ca 1714. He married, ca 1733 Polly Parrott, a prominent Indian, daughter of Tuskie and Haio, full blooded Creek Indians. They had a son, John Boggs, born ca 1734. He married Mary Musgrove, born ca 1736. They had several children, James L. Boggs, John, Ezekiel and Phoeba, all born in North Carolina. Little information is known prior to James L. Boggs. It is known that he had several brothers and sisters. A brother, John Boggs Jr. (no further record of him). There was a John Boggs born ca 1750 and killed 10-25-1788 in Lee Co., Va. His wife was Eve Springer. He was a private from N.C. . It is said that this John Boggs was a brother to our James L. Boggs Sr. . Indian Rolls, 1835 Henderson Roll, film 2, lists John Boggs, Candy's Creek, Tenn. All 14 family members were full blooded Cherokee. Film # 13 lists L.D. Parrott, Polly's half breed brother. Film # 36 lists Polly, wife? of John Dave Boggs. John Boggs Indian name (Tauchuluna) appears on "a list of The Appraisements of Indian Approvements", $ 28.00 Treaties between the United States of America and several Indian Tribes from 1778 to 1837, John Boggs signed a treaty on Jan. 6, 1817 using his Indian name, (Tauchuluna) War of 1812, John Brown's Company, Colonel Gideon Morgan Jr.'s Regiment of Cherokees, lists Sergeant John Boggs, Suaggy Boggs, and Dick Boggs. John and Mary Musgrove Boggs had 4 children, possibly more. James L. John, Ezekiel, and Phoeba. Their son John Boggs settled on the holston River in present day Scott Co., he was born ca 1752 in N.C. and killed in a barn raising accident. The story goes that a son of James L. Boggs accidentally pushed him off a barn wall, killing him. After the death of John, Eve took her children and went back to N.C. and lived in her parent's home. She never remarried. John Boggs was in the N.C. Militia during the Revolutionary War. He enlisted in Orange County in Goodman's Company of the 4th Regiment as a private, July 15, 1776. (Then it gives the Children of John and Eve, and so on....Edward's own comment) James L. Boggs' father, John Boggs, signed a petition on april 10, 1773 requesting that County Bounds be established for Chowan Co., N.C. James L. Boggs lived out his last years in Lawrence County, Ky. He was buried in the old Nese Rice Cemetery located about 5 miles west of Blaine on the hill above the Ferguson Market o Hwy. 32. His grave is on the upper corner of the cemetery and is marked by a head and shoulders type stone, made from native sandstone and now is so deteriorated no writing is visible. Note from Edward: I have seen the Treaties signed by John Boggs to be found on the web....not fabricated....a cousin gave me all this info that was collected from an authoritated source... I am not here to dispute other Boggs genealogies....let what is here speak for itself....then you decide....Ineffably, Edward G. Boggs
I quit! I just don't have anymore time to massage this database right now. I will make whatever corrections you send me until Sunday 10-Dec-2000. (Many folks did send in many additions and corrections in the last few days -- database is up from 15,662 (or, whatever) to 15,914.) You can get the stats and an intro here: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cutlip/database CD-ROM distribution starts 11-Dec-2000. E-mail me (address below) with instructions: how many? sent where? ship by? and a phone number would help in case any questions come up. What do you get for your effort? If it goes as planned: You will get CUTLIP00.GED (= Cutlip 2000 GEDCOM file); you will get a working genealogy program with database in place and bootable ... give it to relatives and tell them to just shove it in their CD-ROM player on their computer -- it (I hope) will auto start. Next year you get more! Rod Bias -- E mailto:Rod.Bias@asu.edu Rodney L. Bias (602) 438-9202 4648 East Saint Catherine Avenue Phoenix, Arizona 85040-5369 USA

Dear List, New question: Randalph "Ran" "Rand" Boggs, m. January 05, 1909, Breathitt Co, KY . Bessie "Bach" or is it Bessie "Back"? Is RandAlph correct? or is it RandOlph? Regards, John Andrew Boggs
Just a bit of background story I've heard about the many "Lorenzo(a) Dow"s - there was once a very popular preacher who traveled all over Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky preaching revivals and tent meetings - his name was Lorenzo Dow. Since he was highly respected, many parents named their sons in honor of him much the same way parents have always named their children after famous people. I can't produce documentation about this man - but have heard the story from two different sources - I also have a "Lorenzo Dow" in my family line. Lorenzo Dow McTHENY son of Mary Jane BOGGS and John McTHENY. They lived in the Braxton, Clay, Roane County areas of West Virginia around the 1880-1900s. Karen (Drake) Wright
The Marriage License Index CD distributed by the Wise County Circuit Court records the following on Loranzo Dowell Boggs: Loranzo D. Boggs, s/o William and Anna Boggs Regina Sergent, d/o Henry and Margaret Sergent Married in Wise County, VA 10/02/1869 (That is 2 October 1869 for those who served in the military.) The spelling of the given name is often ended in an "a," depending on how the Court Clerk or census taker wanted to spell it. Loranzo(a) Dowell was a common given name back in those days, and was not limited to the Boggs family. Jack Brummett, Austin, TX
Three more pictures have been added to the Boggs Family Album by John Holbrook. I feel these old photos are real treasures! One picture is of James Perry Boggs, also known as "Hook Jim." Jim lost his arm in the Civil War and made a hook to use. He and a child are pictured on a sled pulled by mules. There is also a picture of his hook. The third picture is of Rand Boggs (son of Lorenzo Dow) and his wife Bessie Back Boggs. Thank you John for sharing them with us. The URL for the Boggs Family album is: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=573222 Sharon McKenzie
Dear List, What is Dow's first name? I have it as above from more than one source and different spellings from same sources. Marriage date: I have REGINA SARGENT m. October 20, 1869 & Regina Sargent or (Sargeant) on 10-02-1869 in Wise Co, VA. This is probably a transportation error in the date of marriage. I have never liked the use of numbers for month /day. For 27 years I worked in a system that used day-month-year. Now I am in a world that uses month-day-year. I find that folks (me at least) get a bit confused when there are no comparison dates. If 1-11-1869 is used, it could very well stand for two different dates. 1 November 1869, is difficult to confuse. It keeps numbers separated & the text is clear. I have always used a cut/copy/paste approach to my editing process. This way, I know that this was the precise data received on my end. A bit confused, which doesn't take much at my age, John Andrew Boggs
Hello cousins, Dow was born 1847, at which time his parents were living on Cane Patch Fork, of the Powell River, near Black Mt. They owned 38 acres valued at $1.00 per acre. . In the 1857 tax list, this was in Wise County, but in the 1850 census it was Lee County. There were several Boggs' living nearby. In the 1860 census, it became Wise County. In 1867, they moved back to Lawrence County KY. I have been told that Dow made many trips from Lawrence County to Wise County, and knew the way so well he could make the trip even when he became blind. Dow made the trip to Virginia with his brother Jesse when Jesse killed John Sparks ( Dow may have took part in the killing). John Sparks had murdered their brother Hugh, and 16 year old cousin James Boggs while the two were working in a cornfield. I welcome any and all information on Lorenzo or his family. John Holbrook
