Nothing to do with my pursuit of the Indian Boggs...I remeber reading the story of Boggs in Ohio being born as an illegitimate child of Ebenezer Zane. I found a listing of Wyandot Indians in Ohio and two names listed there were: Ebenezer Zane, Indian name: Hayanoise William Zane, Indian name: Sauratoudo Does anyone know if this is the same Ebenezer for which Zanesville, Ohio is named? If so, I did not know that Ebebzer Zane was Indian. Edward
Pictures of Napoleon Bonaparte (Boney) Tilson and his son, Raymond, have been added to the online Boggs Family album by Robert Cunningham. Thanks Bob! Boney's first wife was Mary Belle Boggs. He was the second husband of Amanda Lester Gambill Tilson and the father of Raymond Tilson. Boney was a half-brother to Fanny Tilson (same mother). Raymond Tilson was the son of Napoleon Bonapart (Boney) Tilson. The URL for the photo album is: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=573222 Scroll down the page to "Boggs Family." The online album was started with one picture of a headstone and has grown to 49 photos that have been contributed by Boggs family descendants. Many of us consider these old photos to be real family treasures and I greatly appreciate the fact that others have taken the time to share them with all of us. Please let me know if you have something you can add to the collection. If you have a scanner, they can be emailed to me (JPEG format seems to work best). Or, I can scan a good photocopy sent to me by snail mail. I will send you my snail mail address if that would work best for you. Please contact me directly at smckenzi2@home.com . It is not my intention to include a lot of genealogy information with a picture, however, a little bit of info about the person (or people) in a photo is appreciated and helps all of us to relate a picture to those in our own files. And, it is sometimes a good springboard for discussion. Happy Holidays to everyone and thanks again Bob for the photos you have contributed to the album. Sharon McKenzie
Edward I am surprised that an Ohio resident would think that Ebenezer Zane was Native American. He did have very close ties to Native Americans and may have been given an Indian name by them at some point. This was not uncommon. Were you absent during Ohio history class. Ebenezer Zane 1747-1812, American pioneer and land speculator, b. near what is now Moorefield, W. Va. (then Virginia). With his brothers Silas and Jonathan, he went west in 1769 and established the settlement at Wheeling, of which he became the leader. The Zanes distinguished themselves in warfare with the Native Americans in the American Revolution, defending Fort Henry in the Wheeling region from attacks in 1777 and 1782. It was in one of these attacks that a sister, Elizabeth Zane, is supposed to have displayed great heroism under fire. In 1796, Ebenezer obtained from Congress permission to blaze a trail through Ohio to Kentucky. With Jonathan Zane and John McIntire (Ebenezer's son-in-law), he opened the famous Zane's Trace from Wheeling to Maysville, Ky., and started settlements along the trace. In 1799, McIntire and Jonathan Zane began the settlement of Zanesville, Ohio.
I know this is unusual but one of our own Boggs family researchers has had a very serious auto accident. Jeanette Hudson is in critical condition in an Atlanta hospital. I would like to ask that we all say a prayer for Jeanette and drop a short email of support to her at ChelleBrisco@aol.com Jeanette's daughter will read each email to her at the hospital. We are not sure how much she hears at this point but she will enjoy reading them as she recovers. Please do not send E-cards as the download time could get out of hand. Thanks-- Dave
...and speaking of Sacred Wind, KY, several of my Ferguson/Boggs family were born there in the late 1800's to early 1900's. When in Kentucky for the '99 Boggs reunion, Ray Williams was kind enough to take us to where Sacred Wind "used to be". He showed us where the Post Office stood, and where my ancestors (Nancy Boggs/George Ferguson) cabin was. I have a photo of Sacred Wind on my web site: www.ancientfaces.com and although you can't see the photo too well on the home page, it also appears on the 'photos' page. If anyone would like a copy of this photo, I will be happy to email it to them (email me directly to spare the list). Searching for Sacred Wind on the internet over 2 years ago (I thought maybe it was a 'nice sounding' name that my aunts made up!) was how I discovered my wonderful Boggs relatives...I emailed the "Boggs" list and got two wonderful emails back-one from Bob Cunningham, one from Dave Church...both 'new cousins' who contributed most of the info I have in my Boggs database, and I am so happy to have them as 'kin'....so, Sacred Wind is a very special place to me, for many reasons! Hello Boggs List, This is my first go with you all. My great grandparents, H.W. BOGGS and Amanda F. WILSON, were married on 6 June 1861 in Hempstead Co., AR. He was born in AL, she in MS. Their children born in AR were: Claudia A., James T. and Joseph A. Later children born in TX were: Julie A. and Hilliard Isaac, my grandfather. I would appreciate any info on them or their relatives. Thanks for everyone's help. Hal Boggs
Sharon, You may know this story but thought I would add it in case you had not heard. Sacred Wind was so named because of the Camp Meetings and Preaching's that happened there. It is said that some of the speakers were rather long winded, hence Sacred Wind. There still today are found the stone steps of the school and a few other things that will tell one that people once lived there. Sacred Wind is on the left hand fork of Cains Creek near Blaine KY. Maj. Gen Boggs (one of Gen. Smith's staff), Civil War is referred to briefly but kindly in a personal recollections of Virginia McCollum Stinson, excertped in Heroines of Dixie, ed. Katharine Jones. happy holidays, jennifer
Thanks to Bob Cunningham for adding another picture to the Boggs album. The latest addition is a photo of Amanda Lester Gambill Tilson. It was taken in 1914, after she had left KY and was living in Ohio, where she lived out her life near Columbus. Amanda's first husband was Lafayette Gambill, biological son of Henderson Boggs. After his death, she then married Napoleon Bonaparte Tilson, who was a widower. His first wife was Mary Boggs, daughter of Henderson Boggs and a half-sister to Lafayette Gambill. Napoleon (Boney, as he was called) and Amanda didn't have any children together, but he and Mary Boggs had a son, Raymond. The picture of Amanda was on a post card that was sent to her daughter, Nola Mae Gambill Boggs, Bob Cunningham's Grandmother, back to Sacred Wind, KY. The place is still identified on county maps, but there is nothing there today and not much more than a post office in 1914. The post office serviced dozens of farms in the area at that time. Thanks again Bob, for sharing these family photos with all of us. Sharon McKenzie Visit my photo albums at: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=573222
