Ray, I appreciate your response. I, too, don't think that these two Benjamin F. Boggs are the same person. I think that my Benjamin F. Boggs is somehow related to either Joseph, William or Aaron Boggs who lived in York County, SC between 1790 and 1810. Does anyone have any information on these families? I have also found a Benjamin Boggs in the 1810 and 1820 NC Census, but it is unlikely that this man was my Benjamin's father since my Benjamin was supposely born about 1819 in SC. Larry: It is curious to me that there might be more than one Benjamin Franklin Boggs. I have a Benjamin Franklin Boggs in my Boggs line, but he was one of 11 children of Aaron Boggs and Melvina Hitt. He was born in Covington, Miami Co, Ohio around 1846. Doesnt sound like the one youre looking for because, unless I'm mistaken, he was never in Alabama. \ Ray > Subject: [BOGGS-L] RE: Benjamin F. I am looking for the parents of Laura BOGGS and confirmation of the marriage of: Laura BOGGS to John A. JOHNSON in about 1869. Location is unknown. Laura and John had issue: Josephus JOHNSON, b: June 18, 1870 in Mayes, Oklahoma. He died March 4, 1942. He is my wife's great-grandfather. Any and all information will be greatly appreciated. Bev, I can only tell you of JOHN L.YORK-b.1877 Leslie Co. Ky son of Jimmy York and Rebecca Boggs d.Dec 25, 1943 in Young Co. TX. buried in Oakgrove cemetery,Graham TX.Father of 7.Lawrence York-b.1899,Rebecca Elizabeth- b.1901,Ethel York-b.1904,Felix York-b.1906, Arta Mae York-b.1909,Maggie York- b.1911 and Bertha Helen York -b.1913.(My grandmother, the only one still living) We have no knowledge of there being any other children though I would not say there weren't any.Grandpa John never told us if there were.Rebecca married George Joseph after Jimmy was shot to death on the front porch of their home when a sheriff came to investigate moonshining and thought Jimmy was reaching in his pocket for a gun.Jimmy was completely unarmed and died in Rebecca and his son John's arms.He also was no longer moonshining.John L. York left KY for TX. in 1908 with his first 4 children and his wife Cassie Baker -b.1875 Daughter of William Baker- b.1850 and Elizabeth Wells.Interestingly Cassie Baker's grandmother was George Joseph's sister ,Cassie Joseph. There may have been other children to Rebecca and George Joseph but we don't know of them so it will be interesting to watch and see. RoEllen
RoEllen, On the two papers that I have they show Rebecca, b. 1860 on the one from "Pioneers Families of Leslie County", 1861 on the one from the LDS library. The book has her married twice, Jimmy York #1 and #2 to George Joseph. LDS library shows only Jimmy York as a husband. This is the only information on Rebecca that I have at present. I too hope that we get this straighten out. Cousins, Here hoping that everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I am looking for the correct information on a Levi Boggs, b. Oct 7 1835, d. Aug 14 1914?????????????? These date from the LDS library. Levi is the son of Eli Boggs and Sarh "Sally" Eldridge. Per the LDS library he married a Elizabeth Davis. Levi and Elizabeth had the following children per LDS; David, Arminda, Rebecca, Marion, Silas, Isaac, Will, Henry, Henderson, Levi, Sarah E. Now, more information that I have coming from Sadie Stidham's book, "Pioneer Families of Leslie County" show Levi to be born in 1835 and married to Elizabeth Calhoun. This book shows the following children; Henry, Isaac, Henderson, Sarah, Rebecca, Marion, William, Levi, Silas. Nine children from the book and eleven children from the LDS library. Two different last names for the wife. Both of these sources even show different mate for some of the children. What I am after is, which is the right source and if both sources are wrong, then what is right? Thanks for any help Paul S Boggs Miami, Fl
Can somebody provide Rebecca's children? Bev St. Louis

The information that can be found at the LDS is information that is submitted by ANYONE in the general public...anyone...like you or me. The LDS does not require sources for the information submitted to them. When you look at their records, there is always a hidden screen you can get to by pressing F? (I forget the exact name of the key), which will lead you to the name and address of the person who submitted that family's history. (If you can't find it, ask the librarian how to find the name of the submitter.) Here's a cute, but true story for you. Several years ago I did some research on another line in my family at the LDS library here in St. Louis. I copied down the name and address of the submitter because I had questions and wanted to contact this person. Well, I could not find her under that name or address. I posted a query to my MAGGARD list, and we were discussing if anybody knew this individual or how to reach her. Guess what? She came forward and 'fessed up! She was a subscriber to my MAGGARD list and had gotten married and moved! Also, bear in mind that Kentucky (where the above family came from) was not REQUIRED by law to record birth or death records until 1911. Before that, the "enumerators" were "supposed" to report this information. This was in addition to their other duties and they complained bitterly about doing it (and many did not) and how it made them overworked, etc. The social security death index is pretty much useless, too. Social security did not come into being until 1922 (?), and then even after that, a lot of folks did not qualify because they were farmers and never paid into Social Security. Even if they did, a surviving relative had to know enough to apply for the "one time" death benefit, from which the Social Security Death Index is derived. There's a lot of places along the line where the "ball" could conceivably be "dropped." Here's another sad, but true story. My paternal grandmother (a MAGGARD and BOGGS descendent), died in Letcher County in 1974. This is well within the time frame for a death certificate to be on file for her, according to Kentucky law. I couldn't find one for her...neither could the state of Kentucky. Even her surviving children did not realize she had no death certificate on file. She never worked outside the home, so nobody ever filed a claim with Social Security. After a trip to Whitesburg, KY and a visit to the funeral home, here's what we finally found out happened. She died right as the funeral home was in the process of being sold. The new owner apparently ASSUMED that the old owner had filed the death certificate with the state. The old owner, either ASSUMED the new owner would do it, or just didn't care. In any event, my grandmother was "dropped through the cracks." I initiated a death certificate for her, myself, and I finally got it filed with the state of Kentucky 23 years after her death, in 1997. I had to leave the "cause of death" blank because, of course, her attending physician had since died, and the medical records at the hospital in Jenkins had been destroyed by the hospital administrator prior to a hostile take over. Isn't genealogy research fun? Bev St. Louis
Paul, Rebecca Boggs definitely married for a 2nd time to George Joseph. He raised my ggrandfather .Interesting that most documents describe her first husband as Jimmy York ,only one source show him as Felix James. My grandmother Bertha Helen York is still living in fact here with me in CA and she says her ggrandmother was Elizabeth Calhoun who married Levi Boggs, but now to prove it on paper. RoEllen
Paul, I am watching this closely as I am from Rebecca who was Levi's daughter.Would you have record of Rebecca's marriages. My gg grandfather was called Jimmy by us his family, in fact in his son John L. York's cemetery records he is simply known as Jimmy York, but I have seen him listed as Felix York.Just wondering what was his legitimate name as I can't find a birth record or death record for him.Thought you might have a clue.Anxious to see if these Boggs wives can be resolved.I can tell you that family information is that she was Elizabeth Calhoun. Thnx, RoEllen

He married Ina Elisabeth Kitchens about 1904 and was living in Seminole County Ok. in 1926/27 . The Kitchens family homesteaded in the Klamichi mountains in southern Ok. any scrap of info would be appreciated. Jess Boggs
Hi Cousins! I need your help in locating my great, great grandfather's parents! My great, great grandfather was Benjamin F. Boggs. In the 1860 Census for Perry County, Alabama, he was shown to be living in the Brush Creek Beat with his wife Mary and their six children. He was 41 years old and was shown to have been born in SC. There were no other Boggs listed in this census for Perry County. I later found where he married Jane Martin in Dallas County (an adjoining county) in 1842. I also found a Josiah N. Boggs that died in Perry County in 1840-1841 who left minor children. However, I have not been able to establish a connection between the two. Benjamin died in Perry County sometime between the 1880 and 1900 censuses. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I can be contacted at: [email protected] Larry McCray
John, From what information I have, James L Boggs 1752-1835, was listed on the roster of the Montgomery Co., Va. Militia in 1782 under the command of Capt. Enoch Osborne. You are looking for 1774 so it could very well be the same person. I do hope someone out there can answer your question. Does anyone know if the James Boggs listed in Capt. Herberts Company of Militia in 1774 is the same person as James L. Boggs 1752--1835, died Lawrence Co. Ky? Capt. Herbert's company was at the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774, and took heavy casualties, if I have my facts straight. John Holbrook
Hi, I saw your posting and would like a picture of Regina Sargent. Do you have any dates for her. I am seeking info on Elizabeth Sargent b. 1808 who married Nathan Young probably somewhere in KY. I also am seeking info on Joseph A. (or H.) Boggs b. 1849, son of Levi Boggs and Amanda (Throck)Morton who lived in WV and moved to OH. Any info would be appreciated. Caroline [email protected]
There are several John Boggs in Lawrence County. The Boggs clan had a habit of using the same names that the rest of the family used which makes things cunfusing. Do you know who John married, and where did he live? Where did he die? That will help pin him down. Most of them had nicknames, did your John use one? I will check all my resources. John
I have 23 Johns and 28 James Boggs all who lived in Lawrence Co. Ky. Can you pin it down a little. Wives, Children, etc. Cousin Dave Church Researching: Church/Boggs/Blevins/Kidd/Lovely I have found so many Moonshiners in my family that I smile every time I see a Mason Jar.
My John Boggs said he was born in Lawrence Co. on 3/2/1832 the son of James and gave no mother. He married Martha A Taylor on9/25/1856 probably around Cincinnati In the 1860 Ohio census he is listed as John Bogs, wife Martha and son Henry(my grandfather). I don't know what happened to him between 1832 and 1856. Martha is the daughter of Conrad Taylor and Elizabeth Ballard Taylor
