Anyone have any information on a rootsweb data base or other places to do some online research about the Boggs/Haney family activities in Ky before they went to Ohio? Ray

    3. I looked at the Laurel Co., KY archives and there are quite a few BOGGS messages listed. I would do a search at http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl (type in KYLAUREL) for BOGGS and see if you can find some leads on Marion. I do know that there were John BOGGS and James BOGGS families in the 1890's. They have been mentioned the the "Excerpts from the Mt. Echo" messages that we get once a day. The Mountain Echo was the Laurel Co., KY newspaper. 3. In reference to Hugh Boggs, son of James l. Boggs. According to Virgil Patterson in his Boggs Family book, Hugh is married to Elizabeth Blubaugh. After his death, she and some of the children moved to Carter Co. Ky. In an earlier version of the book, Virgil listed Hugh's wife as Sally Lewis (p. 18). In the later book he corrected this. He lists Hugh and Elizabeth's children as: Rachel, Mary, John M. , Rebecca, James, Nancy, Hugh, and Elizabeth. John M. Boggs, son of Hugh and Elizabeth was born 4 Oct. 1806 and married Kezziah Miller. One of their children, Elihu(HUGH), born in 1829. This Hugh married three times:1st to Nancy Ratliff, 2nd to Sally Lewis, and 3rd to Rebecca Browning Noe. Hugh lived in Harlan Co. KY, where he spent most of his life. Hugh died in 1903, and is buried in the Nolan Cemetary at Pine Mtn. Ky. Boggs gap is named for him. Hope this helps John Holbrook

Down from the Lowland area of Scotland ca. mid-1700's probably for religious reasons. He was a Covenanter, a sub set of the Presbyterians: Hance Boggs m. _____ Hance (Jr.) - born at Creevy near Loughbrickland in 1774. Received his theological training in Scotland. Ordained minister of the Rathfriland Reformed Presbyterian Church in 1802 and served there until 1811. Will dated 1836. Robert Archibald - will dated 1841 Elizabeth - married John Gordon of Tullyconnaught in 1792. John , James Archibald, Hans , Jane -married Hans Cumming and migrated to the US, Mary Elizabeth Sarah Mary - 1764.- 1833. married John Bell, 1785, and came to the US. where daughters were born. Elizabeth (Campbell) born 1786 Sarah (Huchman) born 1787 Ann (Herron) born 1789 Mary Boggs Bell came to Pennsylvania - Chester Co., then Lancaster (1800 census), finally Allegheny Co. I have the descendants of Ann Herron, if anyone is interested. Hance Cumming was living with his father in Saratoga Co. NY in 1820. A fellow Boggs researcher has found numerous Boggses in upstate NY. Counties. I have used used the research services of the Ulster Historical Foundation, Balmoral Buildings, 12 College Sq. East. Belfast BT1 6DD. I was pleased with what they did on other N. Ireland lines. I have also corresponded with a member of the Rathfriland Reformed Presby. Church who wrote in 1994 that he would be willing to make some local inquiries because he thought there were descendants of the Boggs family, as it's a familiar name there. (actually, he never did, but it's still a possibility) He recommended a book, "How to Trace Family History in Northern Ireland" by Kathleen Neill. Perhaps this will helpful to someone. Good hunting!
