Hello There is a Boggs reunion on Memorial Day weekend at Vogel State Park in Ga Harsea never been but am planning to go this year
I have Lydia married to Moses Shepard, also someone named Cruger; I tried looking up what you might have sent to the list earlier, but I'm not smart enough to know how to do that. ---------- > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [BOGGS-L] John Boggses by the bucketful > Date: Friday, January 29, 1999 11:30 PM > > Is the first John Boggs in you current posting the son of William Boggs of > Frederick Co VA now Berkeley Co VA and the father of Lydia Boggs who married > David Shephard. I have in the past sent to the list information in Berkeley Co > VA history books about her. > I am descended from the Charles Francis Boggs of Greenbrier Vo VA.
For Pspiker and those following this theme, the information I have is from an eclectic group of mostly unattested and sometimes contradictory family papers (welcome to the real world, eh?). I have Major John Boggs born May 10, 1775, married either 1799 or 1800 to Sarah McMicken (McMichen?) whose nickname may have been Sally or Sallie. Major John died February 3, 1861 in Pickaway County, Ohio. His father was Captain John Boggs, his mother Jane Irwin (?) Sarah McMicken was born in 1781, died 1851, father Benjamin, mother's name I don't have. They had 9 children. William 9/9/1801 Lemuel 5/27/1803 Jane 3/3/1804 John 5/6/1808 died 3/11/1884 Nancy 7/2/1810 Lydia 9/6/1812 Moses 8/27/1814 married 8/3/1841 (Margaret Cook) died 1865 James 3/2/1818 Sidney 11/2/1820 R. Scott Perry
Dave Church, you being in Kingston probably know all about this, but for the rest of you, I have Lemuel S. Boggs's copy of "Histories of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church" in Kingston, Ohio, and it includes two brief mentions of the Boggs family, to wit: "In 1799, John Rolins, John McLane, Hugh Menary and James Stewart with their families, and Mrs. Isabella Denny, wife of James Denny, and Mrs. Sally Boggs, wife of John Boggs, joined the church. But all of them, except the last mentioned, soon removed out of its bounds...." "The old meeting house was never intirely (sic) finished, and soon became uncomfortable. In a few years a school house was erected near it, in which preaching and prayer meetings were often held. Meetings were often in a grove near this house, and in families. On the Plains those meetings were usually held at the house of John Ball or John Boggs, and when near the old church, in William McCoy's house or barn...." Rev. Stearns, who wrote the history for the first 50-year celebration of the church, has more than passing interest to me because the Stearns married into the Boggs line about mid-1800s. (I thought the fact that Isaac Stearns, one of the 40 men who took Fort Ticonderoga with Ethan Allen, being related would give me some clout with the Vermont locals. Nope. Dream on, Perry.) R. Scott Perry
A typed document, with some repeats I won't bother with, gives additional information; in the list of Boggses from 1 to 7, it adds this, that John M. Boggs settled in Tippecanoe County, Indiana while Lemuel stayed in Ohio. Then it goes on: "Lydia Boggs, who was a great friend of Betty Lane, was the daughter of our Great Great Grandfather. She married Moses Shepard soon after the time of this story "Betty Lane". Later after the death of Shepard, she married Daniel Crugar. Lydia lived to be 110 years old. She never had any children, and was the eldest sister of our great grandfather, Major John Boggs, who settled at Logan Elm, Ohio, in 1778. Lydia's brother William was captured by the Indians and another brother was killed. Major John, at that time, was six years old and the only boy in the cabin at the time of the Indian attack. The men were all away. William, who was captured, told the Indians that the cabin was full of men and the Indians were afraid to attack, and the women and children escaped to the Fort. Lydia escaped from the Indians at one time by swimming her horses across the Ohio River. She lived and died in Wheeling, Va. near Boggs Run. Captain John Boggs and his son, Major John, came through the wilds of Ohio, the Captain settling on Scrip Creek, and the Major pre-empting land on the Congo, and building a cabin under the Logan Elm. He then returned to Wheeling, Va. and married Sallie McMichin, our great Grandmother (John M. Boggs' grandmother). She came to Ohio at the age of 19 [bringing a curly maple 4-poster bed in the covered wagon --RSP]. She raised nine children. Our grandfather, Moses Boggs was the last one born in the cabin under the Logan Elm. Two others, James and Sidney were born in the brick house nearby, which house was still standing in 1923. R. Scott Perry
Scott,I believe that article was probably from a Pickaway county Ohio Newspaper, The Boggs name is rather popular there and has a great historical background. I cannot remember the entire story, but there is a Boggs farm with a large elm tree on it known as the Logan Elm.Something to do with a Indian treaty and a Boggs man who was taken captive. i live in nearby Ross county Ohio, but havwe never red the entire story, perhaps I should make a trip to the library today. HUGH BOGGS, Born October 25, 1801 and his wife HANNAH BLEVINS are buried on the right hand fork of Cains Creek at the Hen Boggs cemetery, near Blaine in Lawrence Co. Ky. HUGH the son of John O. Boggs and Nancy Wells is directly related to so many of us in the Boggs family. With the permission of Bev. the Boggs-L listowner I we would like to make an appeal to you for funds to replace the headstone for Hugh and Hannah. On a trip to Blaine last summer I was taken to the Hen Boggs cemetery by Mr. Ray Williams who owns the property where the cemetery is located. Mr. Williams is near 80 years old and is a life long resident of Cains Creek, and Great Grandson of Hugh and Hannah. Ray told me of his plan to cut a big White Oak tree that stands over the grave site and start a fund to replace the headstones. The original stone is made of native sandstone and has weathered to the point of being almost unreadable. The graves of our Pioneer ancestors will be lost to future generations if we who care of such things today, do not make a difference. I ask Mr. Williams not to cut that big tree until I could make an appeal to you folks to see if we could raise the funds needed. It would be a shame to loose that tree from the Cemetery. At the Boggs reunion on Cains Creek in September a collection was taken to start this fund. A total of $ 152.00 was collected. Mr. Williams donated $ 50.00 and his sister another $ 50.00 for a total of $ 252.00. My wife Linda and I would like to start this appeal with a donation of $ 100.00. the goal is to have a dedication of the new headstone at the Boggs reunion in September, 1999. I believe that part of what we are all about is not just finding who our ancestors were but also to preserve our past for future generations. I would like for my Grand Children to walk to that spot on the hillside some Spring when the Dogwood and Redbud are in bloom, as I did last Spring and know that some folks before them cared. I will bank all funds received and will (With the givers permission) post on the Boggs List the name of the giver and the amount of each donation. PLEASE CONSIDER A DONATION. IT WILL BE SOMETHING WE CAN ALL BE PROUD OF. Mail Donations to: Dave Church 29859 Jackson Rd. Kingston, Ohio 45644. If you have questions you may email me at [email protected] or phone (740) 655-2725. Thank you for your consideration; Dave
There's been a John Boggs thread now and then, to say the least. This news story might be of interest. Regrettably, I know neither the name of the paper nor the date. I know it dates to about 1927 and I expect it's an Ohio paper. THE SEVENTH JOHN BOGGS In the birth of a son to John G. And Fannie (Sapp) Boggs and the naming of the offspring John Boggs, this makes the seventh John Boggs in line from the progenator (sic) of the Boggs family. The first John Boggs was born in England, he emigrated from his birthplace to America back in the 1700's and settled in Pennsylvania; his son, the second John Boggs, known as the Captain, settled in Virginia; the third John Boggs was known as the Major, was the son of the Captain and father of John Boggs who imagrated (sic) to Pickaway Co. and resided in Pickaway township; he was an uncle of Lemuel Boggs, whose brother John was an uncle of John G. Boggs who was sixth in line and the father of the seventh. Here's hoping that number seven will be as prominent in the business and social affairs of old Pickaway, as were all the others of the name of Boggs. End of newspaper story Further note: In another typed family document, this is added--"One of John M. Boggs' sons, Lemuel has a son named John M. Boggs, who was the seventh John Boggs. Lemuel Boggs of Ohio also had a son named John G. Boggs, who was the sixth John Boggs. He now has a son who is the 8th John Boggs (1927)." I have some tidbits about these earlier John Boggses (the Captain and the Major) and some of the family furniture that came overland in the covered wagon with them when they moved to Ohio from Virginia. Hi John, The names in your email looked SO familiar that I almost forgot I was reading an email from the Boggs list! One question: do these Boggs that you mentiond tie in with a Cobb line? They have to somewhere! I have a line of Cobbs from Athens, Clarke Co., Georgia and every name in that line is a "John Addison Cobb" or "Howell Cobb or "Thomas Cobb". I would really appreciate any input that you might have on this, because if they do then I have boo-koos of information that you might be interested in on the Cobbs that go all the way back to the 1300's in England. Thanks! Sandy L. John Clarkston < [email protected]> gives Neilse Rice Cem. 4 mi west of Blaine on Rt 32 across from Ferguson's store. He is the progenitor of a large branch of the Boggs family that lived in NC, southwestern VA and eastern KY. Nothing is known about his first wife. His second wife, Jane, is named in deeds. His third wife, Lydia is named in his will. He had land grants and owned land wherever he lived. He migrated back and forth between southwestern VA and eastern KY, living in each state for short periods. The last place he lived was Blaine, KY, where he stayed for the last 15 years of his life with his 3rd wife, Lydia Birchfield Rose, widow of Jacob Rose. The first record of James on the Tithable List of old Fincastle Co. was in 1773 on the west bank of New River (now Grayson Co., VA). (Emory Hamilton) James is listed in the roster of the Montgomery Co., VA militia in 1782 with Capt. Enoch Osborn's Company. Also in the roster is his bro-in-law John Flanary. Flanary appears again on the 1783 roster but James Boggs does not appear on any rosters after 1781.(Emory Hamilton) James held the rank of Captain in the Rev. War.(Joyce Hamilton). A James Boggs appears on the 1787 State Census in Wilkes Co., NC, but does not appear on the Federal Census of Wilkes Co., nor on the 1790 VA Census, (destroyed by fire-a substitute was made from tax lists). From 1790-1820 he was in Lee Co., VA and then went to KY with his 3rd wife. From the Land Entry Book of Wilkes Co., NC we see that James Boggs only entered one tract of land although he attempted to enter one other tract, which apparently had already been claimed. There is no record that James ever received a State warrant for the land he did enter which might indicate that although he paid tax on the land in Wilkes Co. he did not follow through on paying the fee to have the land granted. He made an entry Dec 5,1778 for 100 acres in Wilkes Co. lying on the North Fork of New River adjoining Zachariah Wells' claim. He paid taxes on this entry for 1784-1789 and then from 1791-1793, skipping 1794, and then again paying 1795 and 1796."(Emory Hamilton) The court minutes of the Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Wilkes Co. suggest he was living in NC between 1791 and 1793. On Apr 19,1791 William Pennington, William Adkins, John Flanary, Micajah Pennington, James Boggs, Elijah Davis, Levy Pennington, Edward Pennington, James Shepperd, Elijah Pennington, Elisha Baldwin, Richard Pennington, Samuel Jones, Zachariah Wells, William Smith and John Henson were appointed Road Jury to view the wagon road from Horse Creek through Blockers Gap to the wagon ford on Nathan's Creek. Micajah Pennington was appointed overseer. (Emory Hamilton). On May 2 1793 we see an entry indicating that James was replaced by Elijah Pennington as an overseer of the road jury assigned Feb 7 1793 to view the road from Horse Creek to Weaver's. He does not appear in the minutes again through 1797. Many of the above named men became settlers in Lee Co., VA a few years later. The Penningtons settled at Pennington Gap in Lee Co., while James Boggs, Zachariah Wells and James Sheppard settled near the Three Forks of Powell River. John Flanary settled in the Turkey Cove area. James L. Boggs came to Three Forks (now Big Stone Gap) before 1800 (Lee Co., VA Deed Book 2, page 9&29, dated Jan. 29 1805) where James L. Boggs sells to Jesse Bowling (Bolling) land in and about the Three Forks of Powell River which had been conveyed to Boggs by Walter Preston "by indenture of bargain and sale bearing date 29 Jan 1800". Boggs remained at Three Forks for several years before moving to Lawrence Co., KY in 1822. In Lee Co., VA Deed Book 1, p. 329 dated 24 March 1804, William McCutcheon Agent for Nathaniel Taylor of Carter Co., TN sells 47 acres of land on Powell River to William Huff; this land adjoined that of James Boggs. July 19 1805, James Boggs (Deed Book 2, p.86) sold 82 acres at the Forks of Powell River to William Huff. This deed is signed (by mark) by James and his wife Jane.(Emory Hamilton). The last deed signed by Jane Boggs wife of James Boggs is found in Russell Co. VA Deed Book 2 p.197 dated 13 July 1819 when they sold 67 acres on the north side of Powell River to John Campbell. The north side of Powell River was Russell Co.; south of the river was Lee Co. with the river being the dividing line between the two counties.(Emory Hamilton) The last recorded deed involving James L. Boggs in Lee Co. (Lee Co., VA Deed Book 4, p.303 dated Oct 15 1825) shows James and Lydia sold 70 acres at the Three Forks of Powell River to Benjamin Tompkins. James moved his family to Lawrence Co., KY in 1822. (Emory Hamilton) James' son, John O., and grandsons, James and Hugh, were listed on the 1st tax list of Lawrence Co., KY in 1822. Records of the United Baptist Church of Blaine, KY. indicate that James was a Clerk for the church in 1825. (Emory Hamilton) His record book of the church meetings was owned in 1973 by Emma Sparks of Martha, KY.(Deb Rush) He served on a road commission in Wilkes Co., NC 1791- (Spring) 1793, when he resigned. About 1798, he settled at the Three Forks of the Powell River in Lee Co., VA (near the towns of Big Stone Gap and Appalachia). Various land transactions are recorded in Lee Co., VA from 1805 to 1825. (Deb Rush) His Will, proved in open court in 1835, recorded in Lawrence Co., KY (Will Book 1, p.15) indicated that he was a resident of Lawrence Co., KY at the time he wrote it (1 Nov 1832) and that his wife's name is Lydia, to whom he leaves, "together with the two youngest children" his plantation, furniture and animals. The will was sealed in the presence of William Ison, I.O. Sparks, Ison Fields, and William Boggs.(Emory Hamilton). The wording of his will "...no other person to meddle with the plantation", indicates friction between his widow and his children. Records of the Blaine United Baptist Church show his dau-in-law, Nancy (Wells) Boggs brought charges against Lydia Boggs. He married Elizabeth "Jane" Clement (d/o Hugh Clement and Jane) c1777 in Wilkes Co., NC.4,8,10,19,20 Elizabeth was born in 1755.2 OR 1759 in NC.17,5 She died 1818 in Lee Co., VA.17 OR 1819 in Lawrence Co., KY.5; buried in Nelson/Rice Cem. FIRST GENERATION 1. John Boggs was born either in 1720 in Scotland or Ireland.2 OR in 1725.3 OR in 1734 in Ireland.4,5 He died c1756.3 He immigrated to America in the 1700s and settled in NC. Some records in NC show a Joseph Boggs - perhaps his name was John Joseph? He traveled along with his sons and daughter Phoebe to Lee Co.,VA in what is known now as Stonega (Wise County). Some historians believe that they were Tories and traveled west to escape the treatment accorded to those on the side of the King. Others believe that they were Quakers and wanted no part of the war. On April 10, 1773 he signed a petition requesting that county bounds be established for Chowan County. He married Mary Keys c1745.6,7,2 She was born 1725 in Scotland.2 Children: 2 i. Mary Boggs. +3 ii. John Boggs. +4 iii. James Lee Boggs. +5 iv. Phoebe Boggs.
Can anyone tell me where, how, and why James Boggs from Irelan/Scotland was believed to be the son of John Livingston, and what the original source for this belief was? Thanks1 e.g.Boggs
