Does anyone know if Cratis Williams is still living, or if Emory Hamilton left any of his research in a library or historical society? thanks, John Holbrook
There are stories in my family about being Black Dutch. I descend from James L. Boggs tthrough his son John O. Boggs. All I know is that the "Old Folks" all said we were Black Dutch. Yet they did not know what the term meant. Also, Boggs is a name found in the old Cherokee Indian Rolls. There are Cherokee Indians today with the last name of Boggs. John Holbrook
What does this mean? I must be very ignorant. ---------- > From: Edward Boggs <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Subject: [BOGGS-L] Melungeon > Date: Friday, February 19, 1999 11:54 PM > > Are there any other Boggs out there who seem to have "Black Dutch " > stories in their family? Are there any other Boggs out there who seem to have "Black Dutch " stories in their family? When reading a Boggs listing on the web, I counted at least 18 surnames from a melungeon list in N. Brent Kennedy's book that were intermarried with Boggs.
I have lost the address for the Boggs newsletter. If anyone could help it would be appreciated. thanxx- edward .g. boggs

Hi Estel, I apologize for the delay in replying to you, but we have been upgrading our computer so I have been offline for a while. I checked my database for the names that you listed below and, unfortunately, I do not see any that match up. However, that isn't to say that they may not appear later as the Cobbs seem to be a huge family with MANY branches! I will keep those names on file just in vase I fins a connection somewhere. Thanks! Today I received another donation for the Hugh and Hannah Blevins Boggs headstone fund. This donation comes from a ggggrandaughter of Hugh and Hannah. Pam Kroetsch Marks, of San Jose, California. Her check for $ 150.00 reflects donations by Frank Kroetsch, Norma Finocchiro and Elaine Gillette, in memory of their mother, Dorothy who was a daughter of Nancy Boggs. Pam is a descendant of Jim "Goins" Boggs. I know we will be able to complete this project with the kind and caring people of the Boggs and Blevins families. Thanks to all of you. Cousin Dave Church Researching: Church/Boggs/Blevins/Kidd/Lovely Please consider a donation to the Hugh and Hannah Boggs Headstone fund. Thanks

I received reliable information that my grandfather George Knight Boggs was born in Ohio in 1855. His father was George W. Boggs, and mother was Anna A. (?) Boggs. The family moved from Ohio to Illinois when my grandfather was about 3. George W. was a farmer near Galva, Illinois. Some of the Galva Historical Society have belongings of my grandmother Clara, who wrote for newspapers in the Galva, LaFayette, Kewanee area. They are sending me a box of information, including obituaries for both grandparents, my father's graduation pictures, and letters from grandchildren (hopefully my half-brother and sister) to my grandmother. In forty years since her death, I am the first to step forward to put claim to these items. This is strange, since until Monday, I was under the impression that she had died in the 1920's to 1940's. Apparently, she and my father either lost contact with one another, or were estranged long before my father and mother married and I was born. So she at least according to the obituaries, did not even know that I was born, and living a healthy six-year olds life in Southwest Louisiana. Another oddity, is that she too was a librarian, as I am. I will contact you if I get any information that can help you. Where in Illinois is Mattoon? I'm trying to piece a better understanding of the state together. Thanks again, Becky Rebecca (Becky) B. Mattoon is about 200 miles directly South of Chicago
Hello all, New information on my line has become available through contacts in Galva, Illinois. My Grandfather was born in Ohio in 1855. He moved to Illinois at age three. His father was George W. BOGGS, and his mother was Mary A. ? BOGGS. My grandfather was a "depot agent" for the Rock Island railroad at LaFayette, IL from 1881 until his death Sept. 10, 1920. My great-grandfather was a farmer near Galva. My grandmother, Clara Drusilla FINKLE BOGGS (b. Sept. 28, 1867, d. Jan. 1958)was the daughter of Thomas J. FINKLE and Rebecca SADLEIR FINKLE. Clara BOGGS was a correspondent for LaFayette to area newspapers from 1911-June 30,1954. She was also the librarian at the town library in LaFayette, IL from Dec. 1922 to Oct. 1951. Grandchildren of Clara and George listed in her obituary were: Laurance Knight BOGGS, Jr., Juanita BOGGS RATZELL, both of Kansas, and L. Raymond BOGGS of Miami, FL. I wasn't listed because she probably didn't know I was even born. I believe that she and my father were estranged for many years before she died. If anyone knows any of these people please contact me. Thanks, Becky Boggs Vincent One nut that didn't fall too far from the lost family tree! Rebecca (Becky) B.
