Elva, >From Eli on, what is your line.?Just wondering. RoEllen
Yes Edward,I found that out.The only thing is i can't actually find the one on our census records that would be an actual individual Melungeon. If one member was shown as a Mulatto or free person of color I would say we were melungeon.I do know there are those with the same surname who were but not yet found anyone in my direct line.I can tell you I and my cousins show characteristics of mixed ancestry. Two interesting people in my line are George Joseph who was the second husband of Rebecca Boggs York(my ggrandmother). He was said to be of Assyrian descent.Whether that is accurate or was used to cover possibly Negro or Indian ancestry ,I don't know. His sister Cassie Joseph married William Baker and was my gg grandmother also. Both were grandparents of my grandmother. There is also Sarah Alpha who was said to be Cherokee though I can't document it yet. Very interesting subject.Either way it turns out is fine with me,I enjoy the challenge of unraveling it all. Thanks for bringing it up. RoEllen
Not too quick to presume. I've been studying our line for a while now. Whether melungeon or cherokee, The term "black dutch" is a part of our family's history. There are still to this day Boggs who are American Indian, as were also on the rolls earlier. most likely ours is of a mix...scotch-Irish...Indian.../ Then there is a line mostly scotch Irish..a little german. That's the melting pot! It's all like pieces of a puzzle, you have to consider all things...and they add up.
The Melungeon people as described by Kennedy are a complicated group of people. I would not be too quick to presume that your Boggs ancestors fit into these groups. Doubtless some married darker complicated people but may not have been of Melungeon heritage. This is a question that needs more research than speculation. Cousin Dave Church Researching: Church/Boggs/Blevins/Kidd/Lovely Please consider a donation to the Hugh and Hannah Boggs Headstone fund. Thanks
The "Melungeon" people appear to be different than the term "Black Dutch". It appears that the term Melungeon refers to the "Blue People" of Hazard Co., Kentucky. The website sent by 'Micromanxx' references an article about the descendants of Martin Fugate, and an enzyme that turned them blue. Really fascinating...now, does anyone remember any stories referencing their 'blue' ancestors? Thanks 'Micromanxx"! Pam Marks
Excuse my ignorance, but what is Melungeon? My Boggs were all black headed and black eyed withe the exception of my mother who had brown hair and hazel eyes. They claimed to be part and I've heard the term Black Dutch but till now I never knew what that means either. We never know till we ask the questions do we? did you know Roellen, that Fields and Campbell are known melungeon names too?
Hello My Boggs line descendants of Eli Boggs were of dark complexion with blue eyes and jet black hair. We were always told Grandma was Cherokee Indian. My dad a "Nolan" said he was Black Dutch and Irish. So I think we need answers to all our questions about our Melungeon ancestry. Elva
Try checking out these sites for more info on Melungeon history. http://wsrv.clas.virginia.edu/~rjh9u/methb.html http://wsrv.clas.virginia.edu/~rjh9u/blkysc82.html
Don't know Cratis Williams. Emory Hamilton's work was left to the library at Clinch Valley College of the University of VA in Wise VA. It is not accessible because it has not been cataloged. In Jan. a librarian there told me a grant was being written to secure a dedicated librarian for the genealogical works like those of Emory Hamilton and E.J. Sutherland. Edward, We definitely have stories of black Dutch which I thought was simply dark skinned Dutch as we are all black eyed and many of us are black haired with an occasional blue eyed blonde. After researching through my allied families,York,Baker,Fields,Wells,Campbells ,I found that we were not dutch at all.Further research incicates that we are possibly of mixed ancestry.Just haven't found the exact individual or individuals that contributed darker genetics. I am the gggrandaughter of Rebecca Boggs who marreied John L.York.Rebeccas father was Levi York son of Eli York.In KY they were close friends with the Goins and some of them married. The Goins were definitely Melungeon. Interesting subject ,don't you think. RoEllen

Edward: We have volumes of the Boggs Newsletter Quarterly published between July 1978 and Winter 1987--vols 2 through 10. It was edited for the first years by Mrs. Alice Grady. She gave it up in 1986 and it was taken over by Robert J. Boggs. I was under the impression that it was no longer published, but I could be mistaken. Alice Grady lived in Stow, Mass. and Robert J. Boggs was in East Aurora, NY. I did not know about a quarterly published in Florida. Martha and Lonnie Boggs. We live in Texas. -----Original Message----- From: Edward Boggs <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Friday, February 19, 1999 10:21 PM Subject: [BOGGS-L] Boggs newsletter I have lost the address for the Boggs newsletter. do you have any further info or sources on Thomas Prince? I also have seen a land deed with the name Thomas Boggs on the native land site.
It's a mystery to me. I don't have a clue as to where the Indian comes in on my Boggs. I know that "Black Dutch" was a cover to hide your race, but I don't know if it was Cherokee, or Melungeon, or something else. The Boggs seem to be good at hiding their tracks! My Boggs are from Wise County, moving back and forth between Wise County Va. and Lawrence County Kentucky. My grandmother Boggs says we are Black Dutch, but she has no clue as to what that term means. She says her dad always said he was Black Dutch. Her dad's sister said she was half cherokee. I have checked out the melungeon websites, but they were not a lot of help in connecting the family to Melungeons. I have ran across several Levi Boggs, but no Judge Finley Boggs. John Holbrook
Did n't know if you knew that "black dutch" was often used as a cover for your native roots, to avoid discrimination and persecution.
Yes, my father told us we were cherokee too. I forgot to add that to my query. My father looks cherokee as did his father and my g-grandf. Have you seen the book cherokee blood and it's mention of John Boggs and a family of 14 cherokees? Also someone told me of a land deed for a John Boggs who signed his native name as "Tauchuluna". I too found that there are still some Cherokee named Boggs today. Do you have anything on them? My father was from Harlan Co. Ky. grandf from Lee co. Va. gr-grandf from Wise Co. Va. Their wives maiden names seem to have cherokee connections as well...Witt, ..Parsons ...King...Lewis ...to name a few. Do you have any possible connection to these names ? My grandf. name was Judge findlay Boggs. His father was a Levi boggs...there seem to be a lot of Levi Boggs' out there. Mine died in 1956.
John, Some of the Boggs family descend from Thomas Prince who was thought to be a Cherokee Indian. My ex-husband descends also from the Terry line which I`ve been told is Melungeon. That name is a Melungeon name. Kelly
My ex- husband descends from Nealya Boggs born 1900 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. Both of her parents were Boggs. Her father was James "Hook Jim" Boggs from Wise or Lee County, Va. and her mother was Mary Boggs. Mary comes from the Prince/Terry/Holbrook line and James comes from Eliphus Boggs and Marguerite Sergent. My husband`s people are very dark and Indian and Mediterranean in appearance. He also has Stewarts on his mother`s side and they are Arabic looking people possibly from Lebanon or Turkey. I can`t find out. It is a fascinating subject.
