    2. Edward- That's true about the blue skin, but, I was just kinda hoping that we could say the Boggs were true "blue bloods" (you know, in the royal sense) which sounds much more fun than just "Black Dutch"...can we make ourselves 'honorary' blue bloods? Or, Blue Blood Black Dutch? But here's a quandary; my father contends that the "Dutch" part would be the 'slang' for 'Deutsch', or, 'German'...and that they intermarried with the Indians. Also, even growing up in Washington State, he was told by his paternal grandmother (pure Scottish, not from the Boggs line) whenever she was mad at him, that he got his wild ways from his mothers' Indian side (Boggs/Ferguson) and, that he was 'Black Dutch'. Go figure. He never asked her what that meant, and, the Boggs aren't even german, so that leaves out the translation of Dutch=Deutsch. How will we ever figure this out? Can we all decide on a definition that we like, and 'vote that in', or, is that cheating? Pam Marks

    3. melungeon's skin color can range from dark brown to copper- red to white. There was intermarriage to be considered as a factor.

    3. Yes, we were always told we were cherokee and black dutch. But again remember, sometimes black dutch was a cover for native ancestry.

    3. I have found a good site that explains the Melungeon People and might help those who do not understand what they were. The site address is : http://www.bright.net/~kat/melung.htm. I have had several relatives who have been able to get special scholarships by using photos of some of Hugh Boggs's Family, (Elizabeth who married Allen Harper) saying that they were of Indian Heritage. I have always been told that the Boggs were "Black Dutch" and that there were Indian Heritage in the family. 2. Pam~~ You're welcome! I lurk around alot, but every once in awhile I have something to offer that is of interest! :) I have never heard of anything like that[blue-skinned] in my Boggs line - and most of my family from that line is real dark haired with blue eyes....with a couple blondes and a redhead here and there! The Cherokee came from my Mamaw's side - Martha Foster Young who later married a Comer. Martha's mother was supposed to be a full-blooded Cherokee. No proof at this point. But that Black Dutch term sure hit the mark: I've heard that for years and no one in our family knew for sure what it meant! ~Diana in Ohio 'alias' Micromanxx

    2. John, My Boggs also went back and forth from Wise Co,VA to Lawrence Co, KY. And I have always heard the Black Dutch lingo but no one knows what that meant. Cherokee seems to be the predominant story but that is NOT in my Boggs side.....don't know the answer here! My Boggs line is from Jimmy Lee Boggs>Oliver Carroll Boggs, Sr.>John L. Boggs>Jonathon Bishop Boggs>John M 'Fez" Boggs> Hugh Boggs, Sr> James L. Boggs > John Boggs Sr. from Scotland/Ireland. Is this familiar to you at all? Do our lines cross anywhere? I had never heard of Boggs as being a Melungeon name before. Let me know if there are common lines here. Thanks! ~Diana from Ohio

    2. Cousins, Click on this URL to see a picture of my great grandparents. What ancestry do you think my great grandmother has? I would be interested in all your feedback. Her parents are Hadley BOHANNON, born c. 1837 in NC, and Caroline M. BAGWELL, born c. 1836 in NC. James F. Maggard's parents were James MAGGARD and Abigail BOGGS. We're really stumped on this one! 3. It is fun to speculate about a possible Indian or Melungeon connection. Maybe some day new information will cleaer it all up. All I know is that my grandmother and her brothers are positive that we are Black Dutch. Grandmother says that she has always heard it that way. But what is a Black Dutch, she does not know. So, keep digging cousins, something good is bound to turn up! John Holbrook
