    3. Hi David From this page you will see that the Dragoon Guards were involved in the De Wet hunt from Feb 1901. http://www.angloboerwar.com/forces/army_british_unit.htm The following page for the 1st King's Dragoon Guards actually mentions Hopetown, so it would have been the brigade that was made up of the listed units that captured him. http://www.angloboerwar.com/units%20imperial/1st_drag_gds.htm It looks like your man was one of the 200 prisoners. The page is not clear about casualties, but injuries would not be surprising given the close pursuit described. You might want to get hold of the book "On the Heels of De Wet" that is mentioned. This page describes the whole encounter in greater detail and the dates and places match very well to yours, so I think you can be confident that this is indeed the incident that resulted in the capture: http://www.qdg.org.uk/pages/1899-to-1902-117.php Good luck with your research Jo BTW there is this from shipping lists of 1901: "London Times 24/04/01 (Wednesday) p5b Dateline Bombay, April 23. The Hawarden Castle, with a number of Boer prisoners arrived here this morning." Also: "Cape Times Weekly Edition 24/04/01 p22 The Hawarden Castle, with Boer POW has arrived at Bombay." Taken from this site: http://hometown.aol.co.uk/heatherasplin/bwsl01.html > POW No 16847 > Name DE BEER, DIEDERICK MARTINUS FREDERIK > Age 33 Born 31October 1867. > Address DAMPLAATS HEILBRON > Fieldcornetcy VECHTKOP > Captured at HOPETOWN 1901/02/23 > Sent to Ahmednagar INDIA on board the Hawarden Castle which left Cape Town > for India on 02 April 1902 with 512 POW onboard. > > My question now is ; > > Can anyone tell me how and by which regiment he may have been captured at > HOPETOWN 1901/02/23 -

    3. Hi Jo, I wonder if it would be possible for you to help me regarding my search. Please can you tell me what regiments/brigades based in England and in South Africa were involved in the encounter at Heilbron, Orange Free State 1901/02. Looking for Frederick Ernest Smith who fought in the Boer War for England but living in SA. Looking forward hearing from you, Karin Serfontein nee Smith, South Africa. -----Original Message----- From: Sojo Media [mailto:jo@sojomedia.com] Sent: 18 January 2006 01:20 To: BOER-WAR-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [BOER-WAR] Re: Boer POW Hi David >From this page you will see that the Dragoon Guards were involved in the De Wet hunt from Feb 1901. http://www.angloboerwar.com/forces/army_british_unit.htm The following page for the 1st King's Dragoon Guards actually mentions Hopetown, so it would have been the brigade that was made up of the listed units that captured him. http://www.angloboerwar.com/units%20imperial/1st_drag_gds.htm It looks like your man was one of the 200 prisoners.
