I imagine a man who transferred to the Army Reserve while still in SA would need special permission to do so but it seems most likely that Burn did just that. The fledgling SAC (effectively the British armed and mounted police force of the Transvaal) was formed during the Boer War and many British soldiers were transferred to it for war service. After the war when many of these men returned to the UK it would have been in need of experienced men to carry on. The Natal Carbineers were a local unit formed in Natal and during the war served in the Ladysmith campaign. I believe their descendant regiment is still part of the SA army today.
