    3. Hello Julia, I don't want to disappoint you but the chances of the other man in the photo being your grandfather are as remote as they can be. There were 13,000 servicemen in the siege of Ladysmith and two men in uniform photographed together are most likely to have been mates from the same regiment or perhaps brothers, etc. In a separate posting I have also queried whether Kathleen's grandfather was in the relief rather than the defence force with the photo possibly taken in Ladysmith after the siege was lifted.
