Hello David, My friend is quite elderly, evidently she has the wrong name. I did see the medal and it says on it Ville De Mons. Does that mean anything to you? Many thanks Margaret
Hi again Margaret - 'Ville de Mons' is French for 'Town of Mons'. Mons was the scene of heavy fighting in Belgium, particularly in the early stages of WW1. The medal therefore isn't the Imperial Service Medal. I don't know what it is exactly but it sounds like one of a number of unofficial privately produced medals, possibly sanctioned by the town of Mons. Medals such as this were considered by the British government and armed forces to be souvenirs only and were not allowed to be worn in uniform. Thank you for the information David. Poor old dear has been wearing on a chain around her neck- what she thought was her dad's medal. He really did serve in the war, so I shall tell her it was for fighting in Belgium. She has no family so there will be no one to burst her bubble.
