I have been looking through some of the pages I have photocopied from John Stirling's "The Colonials In South Africa"pub 1904. In this he lists all the little local militia which were in operations at various times. It looks as though in many cases they were commanded by British Officers. For instance Bethune's Mounted Infantry was raised in Durban by Major E.C,Bethune of 16th Lancers. Alas though Margaret I dont have the page for your East Griqualand Mounted Rifles. though there is a brief mention on page 241 mentioned in despatches are three officers Armstrong, Dower, Leary and King But this book should be available in any big reasonable library.
