My greatgrandfather Captain James William Massey, was commissioned into the Hampshire Regt in 1899, and served in South Africa with the East Griqualand Mounted Rifles. He is listed on the Cheltenham Boer War Memorial as one of the NCO and men [vol] belonging to Cheltenham who served in the Boer war as follows: Capts. W. MASSEY (E.G.M.R.), P.C. CLOWES (W.A.B.C.), Lts. A.J. BARNARD (C.H.), D.R. CLOWES (C.M.R.), I have posted before, but asked for information relating to James Massey, but believe my relative was listed by his middle name of William. Does anyone have any more information regarding Captain Massey during this time? Margaret
Dear Margaret, Exactly what information are you looking for---you seem to have quite a lot already. My grandfather William Henry Massey, served in the Boer War with the Manchester Regiment as Mounted Infantry. I have his service record from Kew, and the medals and bars from the engagements he was involved in. Several books exist which will probably plot the route of the war for him, but very little personal records are available, unless he was mentioned in dispatches or diaries. Several of the members of this group are very knowledgeable, but you need to say what you are hoping to find out.
