There is a small rose embem that was used to designate the clasp to the 1914 Star when only the service ribbon was worn. Great War medal index cards indicate the award of clasps to the 1914 Star with the phrase "Clasp and roses" or sometimes "C & R". The small rose emblem was later used to denote under certain circumstances a clasp to a WW2 Star. Regards.
