Simon, Based on your message below, it would appear that you are assuming that your Grandfather served in a "queens" regiment due to the fact that he received a Queens SA medal. This is not the case as all members of the force who were present during a particular period of the Boer war were eligible to receive the Queens medal and it is quite possible that he served in the engineers during the Anglo Boer war. As I understand it, after Queen Victoria's death, forces serving for a particular time period during the Kings reign received the Kings Medal. If I remember correctly, A soldier could receive a Queens medal without receiving the Kings medal, but not vice versa. The information on the medal rim is as noted above. Can anyone identify his regiment any further? There are a number of possible candidates it seems, eg Royal West Kents (Queens Own), Royal West Surrey Regt (The Queens) etc. I live in Scotland, so visits to the PRO are not very practical. After the Boer War, the next information I have places him in A Signal Company, Royal Engineers in 1912. When he transferred, I have no idea.Happily he survived WW1 and was a member of the Old Contemptibles. Thanks, Simon I've stopped 12,974 spam and fraud messages. You can too! For the QSA & KSA medals & clasps (bars) plus conditions of award, see the Canadian Veterans' website under War Medals 1866-1918: http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/sub.cfm?source=collections/cmdp/mainmenu The QSA went to any soldier who served in South Africa but the KSA required the soldier to be serving in South Africa on or after 1 January 1902 and to have completed 18 months total service in South Africa before 1 June 1902. Some missed out by a few days, though I believe that the service did not have to be continuous (and many soldiers returned home then joined up again). But to have 18 months service, even continuous service would have to be from December 1900, in Queen Victoria's reign (she died on 22 January 1901). And the 18 months excluded time at sea. Some suggestion that the new King Edward VII wanted his portrait on a medal. The New Zealand 10th Contingent got the QSA plus 02 clasp (South Africa 1902) even though they only disembarked at Durban on 17 or 26 May 1902, so did no fighting! Hostilities ceased on 31 May after the Vereeniging conference. Soldiers in the New Zealand 2nd & 3rd Contingents got their QSA medal without their name etc on the rim when they left South Africa (because of an administrative problem) so often had the engraving done privately. And some early Canadian QSA medals had 1899-1900 on them - because the war was initially thought to be over after taking Pretoria (5th June).
