Hi Susan, The ordinary rate of pay for a British private soldier in the Boer War was 1/- per day. This sum was unchanged from 1793 and would not change again until 1919 when it rose to 2/9 per day in an attempt to make the Army an attractive and reasonably well paid alternative to other occupations. Soldiers could earn an extra daily allowance (or proficiency pay) if they had a particular skill, eg shoeing-smith, machine gunner, marksman, and so on.
