Hello Brian, There is no J. Low in the casualty rolls. Although there are 4 men called J. Lowe none was drowned. There are numerous examples in the lists of men who drowned on service in SA but it's also possible that not all men who drowned were entered on the casualty returns. These were by no means perfect and essentially relied on the competence and thoroughness of the people who created and maintained them. There are two men called J. Kirkwood who died in the war but one was a New Zealander. This leaves 3981 Pte. J. Kirkwood 2nd Battalion Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) who was wounded in the disastrous battle of Magersfontein 11/12/1899 and died of wounds at Wynberg near Cape Town 17/12/1899. He was originally buried in the Presbyterian section of Kenilworth Cemetery but was subsequently exhumed and re-buried at Maitland Cemetery, both in Cape Town. His grave is marked by a granite headstone. His name is also on the cemetery memorial which incorrectly shows him as being in the Gordon Highlanders. He may or may not be your man but the Scottish connection might be significant. The problem in researching any further is that the attestation and service papers of regular soldiers who died on service don't exist as they were officially destroyed. You could try the Black Watch museum to see if they have any record of him even if it's only to confirm that his first name was or wasn't John.
