    3. Hi David & List: Lt-Col Herbert Plumer took part in the relief of Mafeking and was a commander of a mobile unit or "column" largely of Australians and Canadian artillery. He was a dandy with a monocle but got on with the "colonial" troops. Later in guerrilla phase of war commanded a mobile column in pursuit of De Wet. A "bright young man" (see The Boer War by Thomas Packenham) later notable in WWI, becoming Baron Plumer of Messines & Bilton.
