Peter I have a picture of my great grandfather's regiment from the Boer War. The picture was taken 1906. The uniforms the men were in look very different than the uniform Walter is wearing. My great grand father, James Russell Harry Walker was in the Lord Baden-Powell's South African Constabulary, also, he was a 3rd Class Trooper. He joined on march 8 1901 and was discharged march 20 1903, which was confirmed at Bloomfontain, Orange River Colony. The training he received was paid for by Baron de Rothschild, and they were known as the Lord Baden-Powell police. The medal in the picture you have posted may be called Queen's South Africa Medal, and I believe it was a campaign medal. Sorry if I haven't been any help, but this is all I know. If you are able to learn any more, please let me know, as I would be very interested in learning more about my great grandfather's history.
