    3. According to the family folklore my uncle Jack Macmorland (b. 29 Aug. 1881, in Ayrshire, Scotland, d. 5 Nov. 1953) fought in the Boer war. I have no further information than that about his war-time activities. After the war he served in the Cape Mounted Police for some years then in the first world war as an intelligence Officer in the King's African Rifles in German Southwest Africa. He is rumoured to have married in South Africa. Any information about him or suggestions as to useful sources would be gratefully received. Peter McWhirter.

    3. Hello Peter, You're in luck. With his later service in the Cape Police I thought that he may have started out in the Imperial Yeomanry and when I checked the roll there he was. His entry reads: 1469 Private John Jack McMorland 17th (Ayrshire) Co. 6th Battalion Imperal Yeomanry was entitled to the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps Cape Colony, Transvaal, Wittebergen & South Africa 1901. The remarks column confirms he was later 1116 Private with the Cape Police District 2. His IY attestation and service papers survive in series WO 128 at the PRO.
