Hi Wendy, The four stripes and Crown sound very much like the 19th century ranking of a Regimental Sergeant Major of the British Army with the crossed rifles perhaps indicating a marksman or sniper proficiency award. If you have a scan of the photograph I'd be more than happy to help you out with identification.
