I'm hoping someone can clarify as I'm having trouble understanding military terminology dragoons, platoons, regiments etc. Some kind folk have given me links to some interesting sites but I just cannot get my head around what is written there. I have found what could be my grandfather in a barracks in 1901 census. The commanding officer appears to be a Henry William Mansfield. I found someone on the web who has a little info on the gentleman. I was told as follows:- Major ,2nd County of London Imperial Yeomanry,Late 1st Dragoons (Cavalry) . The web site doesn't really make it clear what exactly they were called. One reference seems to suggest that the "regiment" was filled mainly with "well-to-do" gentlemen, which wouldn't really fit well with my grandfather! Another reference refers to them as Westminster Dragoons!! (pounding headache beginning again.....) So I am at a bit of a loss. Ultimately I would like to know if the above regiment saw action in the Boer war & hopefully somehow find my Grandfathers civilian address. Many thanks for any clarity anyone can provide.
