Hi to all , 44486 Hudson .Thomas Farrier /Sgt 30 Bn Imp.Yeo. 4553 Hudson Thomas Farrier Sgt 53 Coy 14 Bn Imp Yeo. 4358 Pte T. Hudson 18 Hussars. 4351 Pte T.Hudson 19 Hussars. 3545 Pte T.Hudson 20 Hussars. all the above five Soldiers served and returned from the Boer War 1899 to 1902 . however there was a Gunner T Hudson # 4419 RFA.who was killed at Standerton on 9th Jan 1902. My plight is that my Grand father who was a Thomas Hudson who married to my Grandmother in Lucknow India was a Private ,and did not give his regiment on his marriage certificate. However his total absence from my Mothers life, and later his wife ,said to have died, left them well provided for in a Local convent/Orphanage.In India. In my mother papers after her death was a Photograph of an unknown soldier , taken in India around 1890's, showing his collar badges to be the small flaming grenade.Hence the suggestion of Thomas Hudson being in the RFA,?. Also on Mothers Marriage Cert , it shows Thomas Hudson's rank as being that of Farrier Sgt.? Now I understand that I am not able to get ant information on Gnr T Hudson 4419 , other that a death certificate that has the pre mentioned Name. this man could have been a Thedore or a Trevor or some other name. Is there a simple way that I can check the remaining T . and Thomas Hudson's that I have listed above , to see what their spouse's name were,Fathers name etc or next of kin etc. I would be most gratefully if someone could help over this brick wall that I have hit. 1. Re: [BOER-WAR]Yorkshire Dragoons, Imperial Yeomanry

    3. Hi Robin, 1. The Yorkshire Dragoons weren't a 'typical' cavalry regiment in that they weren't a regular regiment. They were the 111th Company Imperial Yeomanry, the IY being volunteer units used extensively in the Boer War with men generally signing up for the duration of the war or even a shorter period of time. 2. He is shown on the IY roll as 32481 Corporal William Wainwright entitled to the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, South Africa 1901 & South Africa 1902. Interestingly the roll also shows 32486 Trooper Smith Wainwright with the same entitlement. This, especially with the proximity of their numbers, indicates they were related. Perhaps brothers? He could have served as a blacksmith or farrier as such trades were used in mounted and artillery units of that era. 3. There might be a contemporary regimental history but copies of such histories tend to be scarce and expensive. Judging by the clasp combination on his QSA he would have arrived in South Africa during mid or late 1901 and did not take part in any major battles. (He would probably have taken part in several minor actions though). However, the attestation and service papers of both William and Smith Wainwright survive in series WO 128 at the National Archives at Kew and these will provide some of the details you're looking for. Cheers, David Robin Wainwright <robin.wainwright@btopenworld.com> wrote: My grandfather, William Wainwright, served in South Africa. If so would this square, with presumably two promotions? I do not know whether he was trained to ride - as he lived in central Leeds I assume he had no riding experience before joining up. 3. Where can I find information about the campaigns of the Yorkshire Dragoons. Any help would be gratefully received. Robin Wainwright - Bristol UK --------------------------------- Yahoo! 3. I'm hoping someone can clarify as I'm having trouble understanding military terminology dragoons, platoons, regiments etc. Some kind folk have given me links to some interesting sites but I just cannot get my head around what is written there. I have found what could be my grandfather in a barracks in 1901 census. The commanding officer appears to be a Henry William Mansfield. I found someone on the web who has a little info on the gentleman. I was told as follows:- Major ,2nd County of London Imperial Yeomanry,Late 1st Dragoons (Cavalry) . The web site doesn't really make it clear what exactly they were called. One reference seems to suggest that the "regiment" was filled mainly with "well-to-do" gentlemen, which wouldn't really fit well with my grandfather! Another reference refers to them as Westminster Dragoons!! (pounding headache beginning again.....) So I am at a bit of a loss. Ultimately I would like to know if the above regiment saw action in the Boer war & hopefully somehow find my Grandfathers civilian address. Many thanks for any clarity anyone can provide.

    2. I do not have any reference to a Baldwin in the 2nd ( COUNTY OF LONDON) Imperial Yeomanry. It could be that I just do not have that list yet. However, there is an entry in the Ist Dragoons medal roll for 4974 Private H. Baldwin that might be your man. He earned the QSA medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, The 1901 bar, and the 1902 bar and also for the Transvaal. I do say that the above is your man, but there is a strong chance. 3. Does any lister know if there is a list anywhere of those who were involved in the Jameson Raid in 1895-96. My wife's grandfather apparently claimed to have been one of Jameson's men ... although he did also appear to have been involved in just about every major event during the subsequent war! His name was John Browne Quinn (aka John Burnett Quinn). He was eventually a sergeant in the Commander in Chief's Bodyguard towards the end of the war, when Kitchener was C-in-C. Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted. Alistair Kennedy Gosford NSW Australia
