I have been looking through some of the pages I have photocopied from John Stirling's "The Colonials In South Africa"pub 1904. In this he lists all the little local militia which were in operations at various times. It looks as though in many cases they were commanded by British Officers. For instance Bethune's Mounted Infantry was raised in Durban by Major E.C,Bethune of 16th Lancers. Alas though Margaret I dont have the page for your East Griqualand Mounted Rifles. though there is a brief mention on page 241 mentioned in despatches are three officers Armstrong, Dower, Leary and King But this book should be available in any big reasonable library. Will do. The KFS were recruited from all over the country..what was your man's name? Some names are added to in the book "the colonials in South Africa"by John Stirling published in 1904. Most big libraries will have a copy. Hetta what I have is this and it's not much. In June 1901 the Ist KFS under Colenbrander were railed from the Cape to the very north around Pietersberg and Louis Trichardt where they operated until May 1902 and took several Boer Commandos They ranged from east of Haenertsburg and west to beyond Waterberg, then on to Bechuanaland and Rustenburg. It doesnt help much but I think your claims date would be the accurrate one. Hi Margaret, I think you will get a more informed answer than mine!, What I have learned is that, Gen Roberts? required each regiment to proved a group of mounted infantry, for instance in my grandfathers case, he served at battle sites as a mounted soldier that the Manchester regiment were not listed as being present. However the bars on his medal prove that he was there. May be you are looking at a similar directive. Have you been able to find anything on the composition of the Griqualand Mounted Rifles , as an officer he may have been in charge of such a group. Dear Margaret, Exactly what information are you looking for---you seem to have quite a lot already. My grandfather William Henry Massey, served in the Boer War with the Manchester Regiment as Mounted Infantry. I have his service record from Kew, and the medals and bars from the engagements he was involved in. Several books exist which will probably plot the route of the war for him, but very little personal records are available, unless he was mentioned in dispatches or diaries. Several of the members of this group are very knowledgeable, but you need to say what you are hoping to find out. Best wishes June On 8/28/05, MarMnkly@aol.com <MarMnkly@aol.com> wrote: > > My greatgrandfather Captain James William Massey, was commissioned into > the > Hampshire Regt in 1899, and served in South Africa with the East > Griqualand > Mounted Rifles. Hello, thanks for your reply. I am hoping to find out how an officer who was commissioned into the Hamphire Regiment ended up serving with the East Griqualand Mounted Rifles who I understood to be a volunteer regiment or irregular unit?
My greatgrandfather Captain James William Massey, was commissioned into the Hampshire Regt in 1899, and served in South Africa with the East Griqualand Mounted Rifles. He is listed on the Cheltenham Boer War Memorial as one of the NCO and men [vol] belonging to Cheltenham who served in the Boer war as follows: Capts. W. MASSEY (E.G.M.R.), P.C. CLOWES (W.A.B.C.), Lts. A.J. BARNARD (C.H.), D.R. CLOWES (C.M.R.), I have posted before, but asked for information relating to James Massey, but believe my relative was listed by his middle name of William. Does anyone have any more information regarding Captain Massey during this time? Margaret
Hi listers, Can anyone tell me anything about col. Johann Wilhelm Colenbrander's column's(Kitchener's Fighting Scouts) movements round about 15 October 1901. I have a problem with the date of death of a great-uncle of mine . He was killed on the day Col Colenbrander's troops destroyed the houses on the Zoutpan settlement (near Ellisras/Lephalele) According to the claims for compensation it was the 15th of October 1901. The date on his headstone is 22nd of November 1900. I am trying to find out when Colenbrander's troops was in that vicinity, though I think the date on the claims form is the correct one, the headstone was erected a long time after the war. Hi again Margaret - 'Ville de Mons' is French for 'Town of Mons'. Mons was the scene of heavy fighting in Belgium, particularly in the early stages of WW1. The medal therefore isn't the Imperial Service Medal. I don't know what it is exactly but it sounds like one of a number of unofficial privately produced medals, possibly sanctioned by the town of Mons. Medals such as this were considered by the British government and armed forces to be souvenirs only and were not allowed to be worn in uniform. Hi Margaret - The Imperial Service Medal was a civilian, not a military, award. It was awarded for long service as a junior grade in the Civil Service. Thank you for the information David. Poor old dear has been wearing on a chain around her neck- what she thought was her dad's medal. He really did serve in the war, so I shall tell her it was for fighting in Belgium. She has no family so there will be no one to burst her bubble. Hi Everyone out there, This is a long shot. Have you come across the name FENN-SMITH among those serving in the Anglo Boer War? Family anecdotal history strongly suggests he served but so far I have drawn a blank. As I say this is a long shot but maybe.........................!! Regards, Tony Lyons
