Dear List, I have a question about "Stowaways". A rumor in our family is that my husbands Grandfather was a stowaway on a boat during the Anglo Boer War. Is this possible. I was lead to believe he was a volunteer. Love to hear your comments. Glynis

Hi Pat Many thanks for your sugestion, will do Regards Denis -----
My grandfather, Thomas Cook came to South Africa during the Boer War. On checking through Kevin Asplin's site, I found two gentlemen with the same name. Is it possible to trace which regiment my grandfather was in by his date of birth - 22 September 1872? I would appreciate any advice. Many thanks Maud Flink

Hi All: The South African Constabulary may have been intended as a police unit, but seems to have had a largely military roll, and was claimed to be largely Canadian: http://www.civilization.ca/cwm/boer/southafricaconstabulary_e.html http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/022-506.002-e.html Plus Baden-Powell's role: http://www.scouting.org.za/seeds/sac.html http://www.pinetreeweb.com/bp-piper12.htm The South African Museum of Military History: http://www.militarymuseum.co.za/ANCESTORS.html J.F.C. Fuller in his "Memoirs of an Unconventional Soldier" recalls as a subaltern of 23 when he was an Intelligence Officer in charge of Kaffir Scouts in 1902. They were with a column of South African Constabulary operating against three Boer Commandos. He saw what he thought were S.A.C. on his right, then he realised they were part of Kritzinger's Commando in British khaki uniforms. His 70 Kaffir Scouts were a mixture of "Kaffirs, Basutos, half-caste Hottentots and one evil-eyed Bushman". They covered an area of 4000 square miles around Bothaville and the River Valsh. Just to put my bit in. I have used Bob O'Hara on many occasions (live a bit further away than you). He lives right opposite NA and has no travel costs, so comes out pretty reasonably. besides he is a Military expert. Hello, Everyone, I was wondering, please, if SKS might have any info./websites on a high ranking Officer in the Engineers in S.A.? I have nothing on his life out there. Thank you very much. Shannah
Hi All, On a recent visit to some family graves at East Cemetery in East London, South Africa, some nearby Military Type War Graves caught my eye. Two (2) of them very old type Headstones reading :- Pte Thomas Thorne, 4 Battn The P.A. Somerset L.I. 5 October 1900, Age 41 Pte Victor Edward Bagnell, 13 August 1900, Age 18 years 5 months. There are a further eight (8) more modern WW2 type Headstones reading :- Pte Bradley J. 4 Cheshire, 25 December 1900 32894 Pte Oettinger / Dettinger M. South African Light Horse, 18 July 1901 968 Pte Kelly J. 1 Connaught Rangers, 4 May 1900 815 Pte Lawless P. 1 Connaught Rangers, 8 May 1900 3180 Pte Burns T. 1Derby (and Notts) 24 March 1900 1316 Pte Mc Clone G. 3 Durham L.I. 23 April 1900 2968 Pte Mc Hugh W. 3 Durham L.I. 9 March 1900 13368 Bomb Ryan W. R.G.A. 22 February 1900 Could these be Boer War Graves ? Did any battles / fighting take place close to East London ? I have Digital Photos of all the above Headstones, if anyone is Researching any of the above names I will gladly send photos off-list. Brian Barrett.
Dear Sirs, I am not sure if I am in the correct place to send a request for information on the Boer War but here goes: My grandfather, Frederick Horton, born Topcliffe, North Yorks in 1864 served in Durham Light Infantry in 1884-1886. His service number was 1581. He rejoined the colours for the Boer War and saw service in South Africa. I have a couple of medal ribbons and bars for him. I believe that he was involved in the battle at Korn Spruit (Durham Record Office Ref No D/DLI 2/1/18(140) refers) but I can find no other reference to him. Has anyone else out there come across him? I would be more than pleased to receive anything, no matter how tenuous a link. Thank You. S. Bigg
Hi Albert Yes I live in Cheshire --so not easy - with train fares etc. this chap has a web site = Bob O'Hara, http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~searcher/ Hope he can help, June On 11/24/05, Albertcolin@aol.com <Albertcolin@aol.com> wrote: > > Have you got the researchers number June as I live in Nottingham and > it will > be awhile before I get a chance to visit Kew again?Colin > > > ==== BOER-WAR Mailing List ==== > Boer War List Page > http://freespace.virgin.net/anglers.rest/BoerWar.htm > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection. I supplied a researcher with my gg father service number -engraved on the side of the medal and his was able to obtain a complete service record form Kew- including the period in India immediatley before the service in S.A. So they should be there! June. Have you got the researchers number June as I live in Nottingham and it will be awhile before I get a chance to visit Kew again?Colin
Thanks for that info Kevin, it will have to wait now till I go again, Colin
Colin, Oh yes.. the soldiers papers are indexed by surname in the period of discharge. As your man was in the Boer War it is probable he was discharged between 1900 and 1913, which would be this file.. WO 97/5498 Melican - Melody If he isn't there.. check WW1 files as a lot of Boer War men served in a Home capacity in WW1 or tried to enlist but were rejected.. in either case the papers ended up in the WW1 period files. Kevin
Hi Kevin, It was my first visit to Kew and thought they didn't cover the Boer War,do they?Colin
Colin, Were this man's papers not in the WO 97 series at the National Archives? Kevin
Could anyone tell me how to get the records of James Mellors regimental no.1888 Coldstream Guards, who won a South African medal with 5 clasps. He is my wifes grt granddad, we have a photo of him in his uniform with grt grandmother.Have visited Kew but found that the muster rolls for this regiment only went up to 1888,was hoping they would cover the 1899-1902 war.The Coldstream archives require us to have birth certs etc.for them to help, which we haven't got.Hope someone can help, Colin White
