    1. [BOER-WAR] Military Service Records Information
    2. Good Day, I am seeking information on an ancestor that was in the Boer War. His name was Mortimer C Herbert, and his number was No.37886. He served with the Imperial Yeomanry, with the 27th Bn. Is there information available on this unit, and are Military Service Records available where I could obtain a copy of his records? Any leads and information will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in Advance. Wayne Holmes, Texas, U.S.A.

    3. Hello Again, I was wondering if anyone could do a look up for me. I need to know which regiments were besieged in Ladysmith as well as all of the Regiments that took part in the town's liberation. Thanks to Bryan Slim, I have learned that this information is located in 'The Times History of the War in South Africa." Any help would be very, very appreciated. Thanks again, Jake

    3. Hello Shirley, Only one man called Cutler is shown as died on service in the Boer War. My reference shows a discrepancy with his initial, quoting both T and J as being recorded. He was 5410 Private 1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment and he died of disease at Bethlehem 20/6/1901. This is a bit of a long shot for you. Your man may equally have been a civilian who died in SA at that time from causes unconnected with the war. 1. [BOER-WAR] CASUALTY LIST
    2. Hi, A Boer War Casualty Roll does exist, in book form I think, but I don't think it is online. However you could try www.lib.sun.ac.za/roh (you'll have to cut & paste) as a starting point, it lists those who died in the Boer war. 1. [BOER-WAR] A. CRICKMORE - BOER WAR CASUALTY
    2. Hello David, Thanks very much for that info. Am I correct in thinking that your source is the Boer War Casualty Roll? I know a fair bit about Trooper James Robert CRICKMORE, he was in the Bellair Troop of the NMR. I'm presently waiting for further information about him, which should confirm that he is one of the same name born in Suffolk, England. Have you any suggestions where I could get more about A. CRICKMORE? I suspect he may be my "missing" greatgrandfather, so I'm fairly keen to get more. Thanks again, Regards, John

    1. [BOER-WAR] Re: [BOER-WAR S. A.John Low & John Kirkwood - BOER WAR CASUALTY
    2. David Humphry
    3. Hello Brian, There is no J. Low in the casualty rolls. Although there are 4 men called J. Lowe none was drowned. There are numerous examples in the lists of men who drowned on service in SA but it's also possible that not all men who drowned were entered on the casualty returns. These were by no means perfect and essentially relied on the competence and thoroughness of the people who created and maintained them. There are two men called J. Kirkwood who died in the war but one was a New Zealander. This leaves 3981 Pte. J. Kirkwood 2nd Battalion Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) who was wounded in the disastrous battle of Magersfontein 11/12/1899 and died of wounds at Wynberg near Cape Town 17/12/1899. He was originally buried in the Presbyterian section of Kenilworth Cemetery but was subsequently exhumed and re-buried at Maitland Cemetery, both in Cape Town. His grave is marked by a granite headstone. His name is also on the cemetery memorial which incorrectly shows him as being in the Gordon Highlanders. He may or may not be your man but the Scottish connection might be significant. The problem in researching any further is that the attestation and service papers of regular soldiers who died on service don't exist as they were officially destroyed. You could try the Black Watch museum to see if they have any record of him even if it's only to confirm that his first name was or wasn't John. Their address is: Black Watch Museum Balhousie Castle Perth PH1 5HR Tel. 0131 310 8530 & Fax 0131 310 643245 Regards, David ----- Original Message ----- From: Brian Low <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, February 18, 2003 5:35 PM Subject: [BOER-WAR] Re: [BOER-WAR S. 3. Hello John, Although this is not exactly what you are looking for I can confirm that Civilian Conductor A. Crickmore, attached Army Service Corps, died of enteric at Piet Retief 17/3/1901. His place of burial is unknown and no more details are given in the reference I have. There is one other man of the same name who died in the Boer War and you may be interested in his details. Trooper J.R. Crickmore, Natal Mounted Rifles, was killed by shellfire at Ladysmith 30/11/1899 and is buried in Ladysmith Town Cemetery. No individual grave marker survives but his name is on the cemetery memorial and on the panels commemorating those who died during the siege or relief of Ladysmith at All Saint's Church in Ladysmith. 3. Dear List, I have just found a family member on the 1901 census for Lincolnshire, UK (where he belongs) but he has a wife and child born in Cape Colony, Queenstown, South Africa. In 1891 he was living at home in Grimsby, Lincolnshire with his parents and was a coachbuilders apprentice. Do you think that he had been out to SA fought in the Boer War and returned home? If so where can I get information to confirm this? If not what was he doing out there, are there shipping lists to SA? Any help to solve this little puzzle would be gratefully received.
