Hi Lindsay & List: Re George Harriman, you should be able to see whether he survived by looking in one of the lists of deaths for his name. Eg (held in National Library, Wellington in Family History section): The English GRO (General Registry Office) Overseas or "ancillary" death registration fiches ONS No. F533-F539, called: "Natal and South African Field Force Deaths 1899-1902 (Regular and Irregular Forces)". If he survived, I doubt if there is any easy way of finding out what regiment he served in. The Medal Rolls are arranged by Regiment/Unit, and generally have just Surname & Initial(s). Both my cousin and myself remember a photo of his Grandfather in uniform. Albert CLARK was born Liverpool March 1879 so would have been approx 23 when the Boer War was on. I realise that the uniform could have been the 1st World War but at approx 35 and well married with four children, I would have thought that he would have been one of the last to be called up. (I know that there was a rush to the colours at the beginning of the 1st World War my own father went aged 16 and perhaps this happened to Uncle Albert) If any list can assist in pointing me in the right direction to obtaining information I would be most grateful Doreen Ch.Ch. Could someone please advise me where to start looking for a soldier who went to the Boer War. All I have is a name and he would have joined from Warwickshire. thank you Beverley Evans New Zealand
Dear All, This is my first post to the group. I am trying to find the army record of URIAH LINES born in 1860 in Chipping Warden, Northants. He joined the army and served in South Africa according to family information. He was not in the UK for the 1881 Census, but was back in England and married for the first time in 1892 and for the second time in 1895. I do not live in the UK and cannot visit the Records Office to check out his career. Can anyone help with information or leads. Any help would be appreciated. I'm new to this list and am looking forward to learning about the Boer War. My primary interest is in the Great War period, but the Boer War and the experience gained by the British Army obviously influenced its approach to the First World War. Can I ask the following; How would I go about trying to discover if any officers or men of the 6th Volunteer Battalion of the King's Liverpool Regiment served in the Boer War? Thanks in advance for any information, Ken
gfather in 3rd HUSSARS WHERE CAN I FIND HIS SERVICE RECORDS? Hubert USA
I understand that my great grandfather, Thomas Reginald Briggs Parker, served as a mounted infantryman in the Prince of Wales Own Hussars (IY) during the Anglo - Boer War. He returned to England after his tour of duty and emigrated to New Zealand in 1906, becoming national president of the South African War Veterans' Association in 1953. I have tried to find Anglo - Boer War service records and medals awarded to specific servicemen on the web without success. I would appreciate any information you can provide me with. Dear List, I hope someone on this list can help with some general questions that I have: In 1899, what was the required age for enlistment in the British Army? How long would basic training last? How long before a man would be eligible for discharge? or how long did a first enlistment last? If a man left the army before he was eligible for discharge, what was the punishment for disertion? Finally, it there a reference book that might be available on interlibrary loan which would answer general questions about the Royal Field Artillery during the 1899-1903 period? Many thanks for any help. Janice Keller Carbondale, Illinois, USA --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Hi All, Rootsweb, the people who look after the servers, have stated:- <<“That during this period of intense political times when emotions and opinions will run high in many directions NO political discussion at all will be allowed on any Rootsweb Mailing List. The simple issue is that RootsWeb is for genealogical research and not for political discussions. Rootsweb asks all admins to reinforce where necessary to their subscribers the basis of the mailing lists and their provision by RootsWeb to users, and, where necessary, take reasonable actions to maintain the focus of mailing lists.”>> So, do please bear in mind that the lists that we and other admininister, have subscribers in many of the countries which may be involved (on both sides) in a future conflict and not everyone may hold the same views as yourself. We hope that you understand that we will not tolerate any backlash towards people with whom we have the greatest respect, both for their genealogical knowledge and their helpfulness to others on the lists. Please remember that that the two most inflamatory subjects in an exchange of views are Politics and Religion. Anybody who chooses to ignore this request from Rootsweb will be unsubcribed. My great-grandfather managed to sign up when he was under age: I know my grandmother had a press cutting of when he was court-martialled but unfortunately I can't find it now. If anyone knows how to find out which regiments wee recruiting in GLS WITHOUT going to Kew I'd be very grateful for the information.
I am new to this list and hoping there is SKS who could help me trace William ALDEN, who is missing from the 1901 census. He was born 1870 at Clapham, Surrey. I have his enlistment papers from the WW1(London area) and he states that he was previously in the West Yorkshire Regiment. Is there anyway I could find out if he was serving in this Regiment during the Boer War Best wishes Jen
Hello Michael, Sorry to say this but if he was born in 1887 he would have been only 12 when the war started and 15 when it ended so the stories he told you as a child were just that - stories. As a cross check I can tell you that the casualty lists don't show an H or a D Ferris and no Ferris at all with the RHA. At that time he was serving with the RHA at Woolwich. > > Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. > > Michael Ward

Dear all, I am new to this list. I am researching a relative who seemed to disappear from the British Isles during the 1901 Census, and I can only assume that he may have been serving in the Boer War? Harry PARTRIDGE (1849-1919) from Loughborough, Leicestershire, UK. He appears on the 1881 & 1891 censuses. He didn't die until 1919. However, I cannot find him anywhere on the 1901 census. His wife & children are shown on the 1901 census, but not him. Even if he had been in Prison, I would have found him! I have done several national searches with various sorts of permutations, without any success. Is it possible to find out if he served in the Boer War? Is there a Boer War list available anywhere that I can search? Best wishes, Martin MOORE South Pennines, Lancashire, UK Outgoing mail is certified virus free. Checked by Norton anti-virus 2003
