    3. Hi Raymond, What about 1942? There is one reference to John Humphriss in the South African Archives dated 1942 (estate papers). Have a look at the Archives INDEX at: http://www.national.archives.gov.za/index.htm Click "Search", Click "RSA" Enter your search criteria (I used Humphriss & John) Click "Search" In the event that this record is like yours, you will have to appoint someone in SA to investigate for you as the Archives staff will not. You should be able to find a researcher on the South African Genealogy web site at: http://home.global.co.za/~mercon. Check also the list of surnames on the ~mercon site: someone else may be researching your (South African) surnames. This is the record I found and the original document is at the Cape Town Archive Repository: DEPOT KAB SOURCE MOOC TYPE LEER VOLUME_NO 6/9/9163 SYSTEM 01 REFERENCE 79848 PART 1 DESCRIPTION HUMPHRISS, JOHN. 3. I have spotted the few comments from list members which stated that there are lots of questions and few answers (isn't that typical of genealogy?). This prompted me to check the set up at the server. It appears that, in the last technical glitch the reply to list box had become unticked - apologies. I have now rectified this. 3. 'Glad to help, Helen. Thomas Packenham's book on the ABW is a probably your best bet. Though there are not many war memorials in Canada to the 8000 Canadians who served in the Anglo-Boer War, some do exist. 'Probably nearest one to you is in the Victoria Armories on Bay Street -- the Memorial Cross inside near The Canadian Scottish Regiment's quarters. However, you are nearer to the town of Ladysmith, an entire town that may be said to be a memorial in itself -- anyway, it was named after the famous Siege Of Ladysmith. The public library there has a copy of my "Kruger's Gold." Scotland was very much involved in the ABW, as you probably know. I do recall seeing a couple of Boer War memorials over there. Maybe take a look at this "Scots At War" web site: http://www.scotsatwar.org.uk/ Best Regards from Victoria. -- Sidney Allinson. www.xlibris.com/krugersgold.html

Surely not, Helen. There are dozens of books available on the subject of the Anglo-Boer War. An excellent overall summation is Thomas Packenham's "The Anglo-Boer War." For Canadian views of it, read, "Painting The Map Red," by Carman Miller, and "Canada's Sons On Kopje and Veldt," by Thomas Marquis. Ask your local public librarian to obtain some of them for you via Inter-Library Loan. And as you live in Parksville, may I suggest you drive down to the public library in Ladysmith to borrow a copy of my, "Kruger's Gold: A novel of the Anglo-Boer War." It is accurately researched, and reveals unpalatable facts about both sides. It may particularly interest you that the protagonist is a Victoria soldier. Enjoy. -- Sidney Allinson, Victoria, BC.

    3. Hello, I joined the list a while ago and I have also not seen any responses to the various questions posted on the list. I wondered, if perhaps, these questions were being answered 'off list'. I'm would love to know how to find any information about my grandfather, PATRICK CONNOR and his 6 years in the British Army. He was born on June 9, 1881 in THOMASTOWN, KILKENNY, the fourth son of a tenant farmer or farm labour. About April 1894, PATRICK, along with his three older brothers, joined the British Army; he lied about his age saying he was 16 years old when he was only 13 years & 10 months old! He was a member of the 18th ROYAL IRISH REGIMENT CALVERY, for 6 years. Sometime in 1900, while fighting in a battle just outside Pretoria, South Africa, PATRICK CONNOR suffered a severe shell wound, burn, large scar and deformity to his left shoulder and shoulder joint. He did not have full use of his left arm due to his deformed shoulder nor could he raise his left arm from his body. Over the years, he had eleven operations on this shoulder. He left South Africa and came back to Ireland on a hospital troop ship (don't know the name?). He was a patient in a rehabilitation hospital in Cork, County Cork in a converted mansion (don't know the name?). At the hospital, he met ANNE KENNEDY, a nurse, who he subsequently married. I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada so I'm not able to go to Kew Gardens to look up his service records. I anyone can give any ideas as to where to look for more information on him, his regiment, the troop ship he was on, the rehab hospital in County Cork, I would be forever grateful. Many thanks in advance for any response to my message, Susan

    3. Danielle and Audrey, I also would be interested to know if any responses are received to your queries as I have never seen any in the months I have belonged to this list. There seems to be a "conspiracy of silence" on any aspect of this war. I searched the library here in Parksville Canada for books on the subject and could find none. I know there were two Boer Wars but am uncertain when the 1st one was. I read the book "The Power of One" (fiction) which is the effect of the war on a 4 year old English boy living in S.Africa after the war.He was sent to a boarding school with mostly Dutch S.Africans. Extremely well written but of course not much of the politics that led to the war. I believe there were many atrocities committed and very poor leadership of the British. Anyone care to correct me on these impressions and tell us where to find out more I would really like to hear from you. My great grandfather James NOTLEY of Gosport Hants fought in the 1899 - 1901 and was missing from 1901 census. 3. Good morning Audrey and Danielle, Re tracing a soldier who served in the Boer War. Often it is not indicated where the person posting the request is located or which unit the soldier is thought to have served with. I have a list of men & women who enlisted in Australia in Australian units. I have some names of men with an Aussie conection who enlisted in South Africa in Colonial units. I also have a little info on NZers and Canadians. With the British Regiments you have to track them by regiment which is on the rim of the medal if you are lucky enough to have access to it. The rolls are held at the PRO in London I think. There are 2 books which list casualties for the Boer War and these are always worth checking. There are histories published on some of the units and the Regimental Museums sometimes have rolls of names. These are probably the main sources for information. I think that many on the list are like myself and happy to do a look up if it is in their area of research otherwise they read and delete. . Good luck with the research, George Ward Member of the Anglo-Boer Study Group Melbourne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shilling" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, May 03, 2003 2:46 AM Subject: [BOER-WAR] Re: BOER-WAR-D Digest V03 #54 > Danielle, If you receive a response to your query I would really appreciate it if > you would pass the information along to me. 1. [BOER-WAR] Thomas Byrne
    2. My great uncle, Thomas Byrne, served in the Boer War. He was at Camp Curragh in the 1890's. I have a photo of him in his uniform. He had come to America in 1871 with his family when he was 12. He is listed on the 1880 census living with his parents in Council Bluffs, Iowa. His age was 22 and I believe he was a stone cutter. I am quite sure that he left for Ireland sometime between 1880 and 1885. I also believe he joined the military when he got back to Ireland. Any suggestions as to how I can find him. There was a letter (I believe in 1899) that he had left for S. Africa for the Boer War and it was from a B. Byrne. I know nothing more about him except that he wrote to my grandmother often. Of course, those letters are long gone. I have tried to get the records but there are so many Thomas Byrne that so far only the wrong records show up. Is there a way of searching through the site? He was born October of 1858, baptized October 7, 1858 in Myshall, Co. Carlow, Ireland. Thanks for sticking with this and reading it all. :) Coral Allbee, California USA

He later served in WW I and was killed in 1916. He was a blacksmith and it has been suggested he might have been involved with the Yeomanry. He was not a professional soldier, at least not by his wedding in 1905. The fact that he does not appear at home in the 1901 census adds weight to my assumption.
