    3. Hello Pamela, I don't know if there's any pattern to the section of records destroyed in the blitz. I've had searches done for the papers of men in the same unit and some are there and some not so it seems to be pot luck. 3. Hi Leigh, Am based in Cape Town, so if any of the graves are here (which there could be as some injured were sent to Cape Town for recovery or treatment) I could take photos and forward them. There was apparently a large field Hospital on the Rondebosch Common (which I can see from my office window). Where those that died at the common were buried, I'm not quite sure. 3. Hello David Many thanks for your message and the information on the 16th Lancers at Lindley in January 1901. Pte Burn was the man I was interested in so your email was most helpful.. You maybe interested to know that according to his 16th Lancers Service Record, Arthur Burn recovered from his wounds and was transferred to the reserve in South Africa in 1902 finally being discharged in 1906. He then emigrated to Australia and joined the 10th Australian Light Horse on the outbreak of WW1 and was killed in action at Gallipoli in August 1915. I also have his Australian Service Record which mentions that he spent 3 years with the SA Constabulary and 3 months with the Natal Cabiniers (whatever they were). I presume that he served with these two latter units after he transferred to the army reserve. However, this is not clear from his records. 3. Dear David, I have just read the message below --so took a look at the Traces info, I wish I had found it before I undertook a modern investigation of Canadian relatives, early this year it is most helpful. Thanks June -----Original Message----- From: David Humphry [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 27 August 2003 19:03 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [BOER-WAR] Where to start? Hello Steve & Valerie, In general new subscribers to this list are best advised to first check the introduction page http://freespace.virgin.net/anglers.rest/BWinfo.htm . However I have a copy of the privately published Imperial Yeomanry medal roll and can tell you that the National Archive (aka PRO) at Kew has given you incorrect information. A proportion of the service records of the Regular Army of the period in series WO 97 were indeed destroyed in WW2 but the Imperial Yeomanry weren't Regular Army and their records survive almost completely in series WO 128. It seems to me that the person who checked the files for your grandfather looked in the wrong series and unsurprisingly came up with a nil result. The medal roll shows that 21460 Sydney (sic) Buckingham 7th (Leicestershire) Company, 4th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902. Because the roll shows his full name this means that the author (Kevin Asplin) has physically seen his file at the PRO when compiling the roll. I therefore suggest you revert to Kew with this information, get them to check in the correct series and send you a copy of his service record for which you have already paid. 3. Hello Everybody, After reading the introductory pages (which, by coincidence, somebody at work had downloaded for me today!), I get the distinct feeling I might as well give up now! I have been trying to find my Great Grandfather, Charles William Bugden, on the 1901 census and couldn't for the life of me understand why I couldn't find him . . . .and it has only just dawned on me that he wasn't even in the country! (I know, I know . . . bit dim or what?!). I have recently had a conversation with my cousin and her father (my uncle) has my G.Grandfathers' discharge papers from his time in the Boer War - but is not letting anybody see them - an absolute waste since none of his children are interested in the family history . . .ah well. Just in case anybody has come across any information, Charles William Bugden was born in Ulcombe, Kent 15.10.1882. He joined the Army after lying about his age and, according to my cousin, spent at least the first part of his time in the Boer War guarding prisoners on an island (St Helena springs to mind - unless there were other islands?). I am presuming that he was in the Buffs but that is only based on his geographical birthplace and lifelong residence in Ulcombe. Between the Boer War and WWI he was back in Ulcombe, getting married and raising three daughters then, with the arrival of WWI he joined up again but was in the Leicestershire Regt. He was made a sergeant, but was unlucky enough to be killed in action. His death cert. gives date of death as 28.10.1918. If anybody has any clue as to what to do (based on the sparseness of my information) to try and obtain some futher details?? 1. Re: [BOER-WAR] Where to start?
    2. Not thick at all. I actually found them the old fashioned way - telephone books etc but try a search engine - I use Google.com and enter the name of your regiment and see what sites comes up - also try entering Index of regimental web sites and that will then give you a phone number or address. The military are so disciplined about their records but I guess each regiment is different too. I was lucky and found they had published a history of mine and it included a chapter on the Boer War and what battles they fought in - how many deaths/medals etc. but not so many names their but it did give me the colour I was after! You might also try the Army Museum in London. Gail PS I have just found a file I keep "Military URLs" and will mail you later when I have more time and give you those. Remind me again what your regiment was and was it English or Scottish???

The following odd scraps are from bits of paper in his files: He appears to have served 20 years in the Volunteer Infantry Cavalry: 30th Novemebr 1900 joined City of London Imperial Volunteers rank Private, no. 1159 April 1901 issued with a Crossing-the-Line certificate (!), on route to South Africa. Saw active service in South Africa (Boar War) 1901 and 1902 (? Gen. French) at various times he was a c/o of some Yeomen cavalry, and commanded a column of Scouts. He reached the rank of Captain. 3. Hello Trevor, The 16th Lancers' casualty roll shows one man killed and three wounded at Lindley 3-4/1/1901. There is no mention of Fredericksdorp but it's not uncommon for alternative local place names to be used in different returns. The wounded men are Ptes. Burn, George and Hardwick and presumably the man you refer to is one of them. Lindley is in the Orange Free State and the action was clearly a minor skirmish. By that stage of the war the major set piece battles had finished and the guerilla phase had begun. Like many other units, 16th Lancers would have been operating in columns - most likely often as scouts or skirmishers - in the drives to capture the highly mobile Boer commandos. 3. I am new to the list and would like to post my interests I have a photo of my father in Northamptonshire Yeomanry uniform, taken at Hursley Park in 1914, just before going to France in Nov 1914. On his left sleeve it appears to be an overseas chevron and on his right either a good conduct or service chevron. However I have been told that overseas chevrons weren't issued until the 1914 war, is this so, or was he in some other war before, as some other soldiers in the group also have them! Many thanks for any help Pete Northamptonshire
