    3. Hi Lesley - 5439 Pte. G. Miller 2nd Battalion KOYLI is confirmed as being awarded the DCM. As you say, it was notified in the London Gazette 27/9/1901 (along with many other honours and awards). He was originally mentioned in Lord Kitchener's despatch dated 8/3/1901. This consisted only of a mention of his name ("Lance-Cpl. Miller") among many others. Not all those mentioned in despatches received a gallantry medal. There are very few citations for the DCM for this period, this becoming regular practice only from WW1. There may be some more details in a contemporary regimental history or in documentation held by the regimental museum but unfortunately the chances are that no record of a particular deed (or continuous good work) survives. You may not be aware that he was wounded at Elandsdrift 3/12/1900. This may or may not be the action for which he was awarded the DCM. Regards, David Lesley Chivers <l.chivers@a-m-u.net> wrote: I hope someone can help me with this query. I believe my great grandfather received the DCM in the Boer War. I have found reference to it in the London Gazette (September 27, 1901) but it does not give any details. Unfortunately we no longer have the medal as it was sold by an aunt. What are the chances of recovering this medal, where would one begin ? His name was Private George Miller. He survived the war and went on to serve in the Great War being k.i.a. on 15th October 1915. 1. Reservist from Cornwall?
    2. Hello List, I have browsed for a while but not posted, so here goes! I have very little information about my maternal grandfather but I believe that he probably was involved in the Boer War in some way or another, but how? He came from Cornwall and on his marriage certificate in 1910 it says he was an ex reservist. We have a walking out stick that we believe to be from the Duke of Cornwall's light infantry, my mother said it was "Dad's" but we are not sure if she meant her father or our fathers! Did the DCLI go to the Boer War? I would be very grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction, Grandads name was William Baker, bn abt 1879 and died in 1944. I never had the pleasure of knowing him. Thank you, Cathy

    3. Hi Gazza I can't help you with the regiment at Shorncliffe (although I have driven through the camp many times!) but, when I had the same challenge, I looked among the officers and then followed the senior ones up. Most officers are reasonably well documented; the consensus in my case (Bradford Moor Barracks) was the Northumberland Fusiliers and I now have the service record for my father - in the NF. Have looked at the census but regiment isn't given. Strangely all the soldiers listed on the census(about 4000 of them) are called "inmate" rather than soldier. Many thanks. 3. I have recently come across a "gold" coloured ring pendant which is about an inch in diameter, and has the word Ladysmith and 1899-1990 picked out possibly in enamel on the face. Hanging in the centre is a union jack also "enamelled" The piece looks as though it is designed to hang from a chain although the one I have is almost certainly not original. Does anyone recognise this description as a commemorative piece or is it a later purely decorative item. Thee is no hall mark . We are trying to discover if a George Henry Hooper fought in the Boer War. The Item belongs to his daughter and she cannot remember where it came from or when she first came by it. Hopefully David Thomas

    3. Hi Gill - I can add a bit more info. 'In Memoriam' shows Lavis as buried at Primrose Cemetery, Germiston. Although no individual grave marker survives, his name is on the cemetery memorial. Another point is that he died in Transvaal, not Natal. Germiston is close to Johannesburg. 3. Hi Folks, I have released my new website tracing the history of the Princess Christian¹s Army Nursing Service in the Boer War. All the nurses I have info on are listed ... But not all the info is online (I¹m only at the ŒB¹s!) If a nurse is on my list then I do have some info to go with the name. I would like this site to be definitive and welcome any info people might have on any of the nurses, hospitals, ships and trains they served on. You can find the site at www.pcansr.net and any feedback would be greatly welcome.
