If you go to the web site of the Gloucester Regiment, there is an old photograph of the Gloucesters marching through St Helena Island with a large group of Boer War POWs - this will give you more information. I hope that this assists. Hi Susan, Why don't you try the Regimental museum at Gloucester. It is very good and should house the info that you seek. Hi Sue: The 1971 reprint of the book of “Honours & Awards” below includes 7 pages of “Regimental Casualties” taken from the “Times History .. “ Vol VII. The table includes “period of Service in South Africa” and “Battles and operations present at”: 1st Gloucestershire Regt. (Oct ‘99-Aug ‘00): Rietfontein, Lombard’s Kop, (Nicholson’s Nek), Siege of Ladysmith 2nd Gloucestershire Regt. (Jan ‘00-end of war): Klip Kraal, Paardeberg, Driefontein No details (just casualties) though for the Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers, Royal Navy & Royal Marines, Imperial Yeomanry, Militia, C.I.V., Volunteers, Civil surgeons, Civilians, Australian Canadian & New Zealand Contingents, South African Corps and Other Contingents (from India & Ceylon?). And “After Pretoria” in 1901-1902 there were not “operations” ie battles, just the guerrilla war and farm-burning! Jenny, Two people died in the war with the Name E. Butler. Unfortunately the casualty returns do not give more than the initial. BURIED AT NEWCASTLE. 7883 PRIVATE E. BUTLER THORNEYCROFTS MOUNTED RIFLES DIED OF UNSPECIFIED DISEASE AT STANDERTON 30/11/1900. The war was over in 1902 so he would not be classed as a war casualty. In MEMORIAM goes up until 1913 and there is a H.Wardell no regiment or rank known who died 14/05/1903. But the author does not know of what. Although his grave has been found at a Johannesburg cemetery he is not on the war memorial suggesting that he may have worked for the army after the war but did not die during hostilities. I also have copies of the casualty returns sent to the war office every six months up until the end of the war but his death falls outside that period. John JOHN CRONIN CHRISTCHURCH DORSET

John, Thank you for correcting my spelling. Strange that John Thomas Wardell would not be mentioned since I have a death certificate indicating that he died of Typhoid Fever in Ladysmith in July,1903. Good morning: I am researching ERNEST BUTTLER. He was killed in the Boer War and I understand he may have come from Chatham, Kent. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone regarding this man. Thank you, Jenny
The book is called IN MEMORIAM not IN MEMORIUM. JOHN CRONIN CHRISTCHURCH DORSET
Ray, There is no entry for J. WARDELL. Good hunting John JOHN CRONIN CHRISTCHURCH DORSET

Hi Keith - Apart from the Victoria Cross the only gallantry medal an army ranker could be awarded for bravery in action at that time was the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM). Unfortunately he is not listed among the DCM winners for the Boer War. I also found that the only Units that fit the time frame stationed in Dover were 10 & 20 Coy, Eastern Div Garrison Artillery. He is totally missing from the 1901 census, which I took to mean he or his Unit had been posted overseas. His wife was a widow when she remarried in 1915, and was attributed with saying that he was decorated for bravery in South Africa, and that his medal was on display in a museum somewhere. This has been passed down the family, but I have no proof of what medal he was awarded, or if he died in SA. In fact I have no proof he was ever in the Boer War. Has anyone any info on him? Even the award of the QSA would prove he was there. I wou! ld be very grateful for anything at all. Keith Whitaker Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

Hello to everyone I'm a new list member, and would like to post a plea for help. William Henry Cousins was my ggrandfather on my mothers side. Dear Keith, I have looked up the roll of honour for the Boer War in the book IN MEMORIUM. If your ggrandfather was in the artillery then he was not killed in the war. There is only one W. Cousins listed as a fatal casualty. The details are below: 5867 PRIVATE W. COUSINS 2nd GLOUCESTER REG. DIED FROM DISEASE AT CARNARVON 13/1/1901. JOHN CRONIN CHRISTCHURCH DORSET
Hi Gerold. Thank you again for this information. It is very helpful. My understanding is that I must have a researcher as apparently there is no facility to pay the archives by credit card etc (according to a friend who has material she wants checked out). Therefore, would you please recommend a researcher as indicated in your email. sincere thanks...robyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gerold Whittaker" <gerold@intekom.co.za> To: <BOER-WAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 18, 2005 5:51 AM Subject: RE: [BOER-WAR] david ludwig bender > Robyn, > > On the South African Archives is the following record which might be him > in spite of the incorrect spelling of the surname: > > ----- Start ----- > DEPOT TAB > SOURCE MHG > TYPE LEER > VOLUME_NO 0 > SYSTEM 01 > REFERENCE 23996 > PART 1 > DESCRIPTION BRENDER, DAVID LUDWIG. > STARTING 19140000 > ENDING 19140000 > > ----- End ----- > > I would suggest that you write to the Archives in Pretoria and ask for a > lookup.
