Chelsey was ordained as a minister of the Baptist church by the authority of Bethel Church in Anderson County, Tennessee. On Oct 13 1849 Chelsey and his family began their journey to Arkansas. They settled in Madison County where he established the first Baptist Church in Northwest Arkansas. He also did missionary work with Indians of OK. He was known as one of the best men in the Cherokee Nation. Chelsey Hood and wife Louisa had 11 children Mary Elizabeth, James Hughes, Cynthia Emily, Harvey Woodson, Rachel Louisa, Rietta Jehosabeth, Chelsey Taylor, Martha Eleanor, Nancy Kesa "kay", Edna Ann, and Eliza Virginia
