She married Nathaniel Boatright. They lived in Lowndes Co. Alabama. Their two children were George R. Boatright born 1861 and Belinda J. Boatright born about 1864. I found Belinda listed near her Sampley kin in the 1880 census. Would anyone know who she married?

    2. I'm not sure. I know that the Boatrights Thomas and Amy came from Ark. They were in Tx before 1830. Their daughter Patsy m Thomas Trammell they both died in Ark at a young age leaving orphan children. I have all the Trammell information, but know little more about the Boatrights. I have a Boatright cousin who knows more. I'll try to find his address for you. Linda

They both died young and left their children orphans who were raised by relatives. 1830 the Trammells were in Richland Tx in Navarro County Tx. I don't know where the Boatrights were. Linda

    2. I don't know. I have found it helpful in my research to find famous people or events with a common history. Not much is known about the first settlers individually, but much is written and recorded about Mr. Austin and his first 300 Texans. Good luck . Linda

    2. Is there any possibility that these Boatwrights could be related to my James W. Boatwright? He left Alabama ca 1880 and went to live in the Temple, TX area. Reportedly he left AL with the sister of his wife, Sarah Langley. He and the sister are supposed to have had 4 more children (names unknown). Around 1900 he wrote and asked to be allowed to return to AL, where he died in 1915. Winnie

    3. PS, she married John T. Boatright in Trinidad, CO in June, 1887. They subsequently moved to Denver. Her mother Mary Jane Bethel was in Denver at the time. Yes this is my Maud Bethel Boatright. She had told me that she had married on Christmas day. And yes, her divorce from Boatright was not finalized for about another month. I can't understand why she would marry a 77 year-old man, unless for security. She had an infant son at the time. I had thought that Jones was a RR brakeman and had died in a train accident. Apparently that isn't true. It's my understanding that she divorced John T. Boatright because of his chronic alcoholism, failure to support, and desertion. We had talked before as his SWR Jones appears in a book I have about some of the Oregon pioneers. In Denver, Apapahoe County, on Dec 25, 1890 Silas W.R. JONES married Maud BOATRIGHT. 15 days later this 77 year old man divorced 20 year old Maud having found that his old man's darling was already married. SWR JONES also simultaneously divirced 21 year old Cynthia HARBINE, another misadventure of his from Portland Oregon. A woman by the name of Anna TORSO hired a private investigator, Charles MEEKER, to track Silas JONES to Kokomo Indiana where he had married Hanna SLYTER and settled into happily married life (finally). Charles MEEKER tyried to abduct Silas JONES from his Indiana home in 1892, likely to shake him down on a bigamy charge in Denver. 1. Re: [BOATRIGHT-L] Does anyone know when or why we dropped the "w"?
    2. I don't wish to start an argument so don't take this as a rebuttal. I have seen in telephone directories in the United Kingdom the spelling of Boatright & Boatwright. One comment that I have received is that the persons that dropped the "W" should be shamed. With tongue in cheek why don't we all change our name back to Allen to cleanse the branches of our family tree. Regards, Denny Boatright

    1. Re: [BOATRIGHT-L] Does anyone know when or why we dropped the "w"?
    2. 30 October, 2002 I have discovered that a number of my "Boatwrights" have the "w" and some siblings in the same family spell the name differently. While no one in the earlier queries commented about the origin of the name, I'm sure you know that the name is one designating an occupation - that of boat building. A "wright" (with the "w") is a worker in wood with the prefix indicating what was made of the wood. In other words. a "wright" is to wood as a "smith" is to metal. So, if this is true, and I believe it is, the correct spelling is with a "w".
