    1. [BOATRIGHT-L] Chesley Hood Boatright (1824-1863), Huntsville Massacre
    2. Ann Marie
    3. This is in response to your archived message dated Wed, 2 Jun 1999. It can be found at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/ARMADISO/1999-06/0928364555 There has been much confusion about the different Chesley Hood Boatrights. My gg-grandfather, Chesley Hood Boatright (1824-1863) was the nephew of Chesley Hood Boatright (1797-1867). CHESLEY HOOD BOATRIGHT was born August 19, 1824 in Grainger Co, TN, and died January 10, 1863 in Huntsville, Madison Co, AR. He married DRUSILLA BESS LONG Abt. 1850 in Huntsville, Madison Co, AR, daughter of JOHN CROW LONG and MATILDA RICE SANDERS. She was born March 05, 1831 in AL, and died December 20, 1892 in Huntsville, Madison Co., AR. They are both buried in the City Cem., Huntsville, Madison Co., AR. Drusilla later married DAVID WARD (D.W.) SANDERS, SR. CHESLEY HOOD BOATRIGHT was killed in the Huntsville Massacre just outside of Huntsville on the Old Carrollton Road, Madison Co., AR by Union soldiers. He was considered a Southern sympathizer by Federal troops (providing goods and services to Confederate soldiers). He was a blacksmith, so he might have shod a horse or repaired something for a Confederate soldier. The following was told to me by my great-aunt, Annie Boatright Champlin, granddaughter of CHB (1986): -Annie's father, John Chesley (J.C. - also known as Preacher John) Boatright, was 4 years old when his father, Chesley Hood Boatright, was murdered (AMBR note: he was actually 3 years old) -he saw his father killed by the Union soldiers, said it was a sight he would NEVER forget -he went with his mother in the wagon to get his father's body -never voted Republican because they represented the Union, wouldn't let anyone in his family vote Republican the rest of his life "A man named Johnson was the leader of the Union soldiers that killed Chesley Hood Boatright. Years later, Johnson was supposed to be a guest speaker at a reunion for Union soldiers. John Chesley (J.C.) Boatright contacted Johnson and told him that if he came to the reunion, he would kill him. Johnson did not attend the reunion." -JOHN WILLIAM MOODY, who was also killed in the Huntsville Massacre, was related to Chesley Hood Boatright twice. 1) JWM and CHB were brothers-in-law -JWM's first wife, MARY MITCHELL LONG MOODY, was the sister of CHB's wife, Drusilla Bess Long Boatright 2) JWM was a nephew-in-law of CHB's -JWM's second wife, MARY ELIZABETH WAITS MOODY, was the daughter of CHB's sister, SARAH BOATRIGHT WAITS Chesley Hood Boatright was a deacon of Huntsville Cumberland Presbyterian Church till his death. His occupation was a blacksmith. He was a member of Masonic Lodge - Odeon Masonic Lodge #44, Chartered November 6, 1851. Chesley Hood Boatright was Madison County (AR) Treasurer 1854-1856. Children of CHESLEY BOATRIGHT and DRUSILLA LONG were: JOHN CHESLEY BOATRIGHT, b. November 08, 1859, Huntsville, Madison Co, AR; d. December 13, 1946, Ft. Gibson, Muskogee Co, OK. THOMAS LAFAYETTE BOATRIGHT, b. May 15, 1861, Huntsville, Madison Co., AR; d. July 08, 1926, Eureka, CA. JOHN CHESLEY (J.C.) BOATRIGHT was born November 08, 1859 in Huntsville, Madison Co, AR, and died December 13, 1946 in Ft. Gibson, Muskogee Co, OK. He married ALICE BELL BOREN January 14, 1886 in Huntsville, Madison Co, AR, daughter of JOSHUA BOREN and SARAH DOAK. She was born January 11, 1866 in Huntsville, Madison Co, AR, and died September 23, 1942 in Ft. Gibson, Muskogee Co, OK. They are both buried in the City Cem., Huntsville, Madison Co., AR. J.C. Boatright was known as "Preacher John." He performed many marriages in the Madison Co, AR area. Check your family marriage licenses. A Presbyterian Minister over 45 years, J.C. was a circuit riding preacher in AR and pastored the Huntsville Cumberland Presbyterian Church 1891-1892 and 1899-1900. He was Madison Co. Treasurer 1908-1910 and taught at the Huntsville Academy in 1905, 1907, 1915, 1916, 1920. Notes for ALICE BELL BOREN: -operated a hotel on the square in Huntsville, across from Famous Store (Ches' general store - Chesley Hood Boatright, son of John Chesley Boatright and Alice Bell Boren Boatright -- yes, this is ANOTHER Chesley Hood Boatright!) THOMAS LAFAYETTE BOATRIGHT was born May 15, 1861 in Huntsville, Madison Co., AR, and died July 08, 1926 in Eureka, CA. He married PHOEBE ANN LOGAN, daughter of FRANCIS LOGAN and MARY GRUBBS. She died in Susanville, Lassen Co., CA. Thomas moved to Susanville, CA in 1899. He was "lured to CA by an uncle "Billie" Long (WILLIAM BLACK LONG) when Long went East and drove a band of horses overland. I would love to hear from anyone researching this or any allied families. Ann Marie Boatright Ryals

    1. Re: [BOATRIGHT-L] Boatwright's in Ga. and S.C.
    2. Linda, My Boatwrights were in the areas of ABBEVILLE and EDGEFEILD Counties in South Carolina and in Washington County in Georgia. I see some Thomas's, but don't relate to an Amy and Thomas and don't show any one of mine in Texas. I have seen these names and places all over the Internet, but didn't connect any of them with my line. I have recently found or he found me, Jerry BOATWRIGHT. His research on the Boatwrights have led me in a new direction. If what he has told me is right, I come from a Thomas BOATWRIGHT (1705) from Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Their are some many Boatwrights (Boatwrights) and so little time. If you look at some of Jerry's bulletin board messages (his email address is Knotzi000@aol.com) you might find what you are looking for. Diane Boatwright Amos

    2. I would like to hear more about the Huntsville AR massacre. My Boatrights were from AR and went with Austin's first 300 to TX. Thomas and Amy Boatright. The name Ryal sounds familiar to me also. Any information would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Linda

    1. Re: [BOATRIGHT-L] Boatwright's in Ga. and S.C.
    2. Diane: My first Boatright ancestor that I know of is Thomas Boatright m Amy unknown. They went with Stephen F. Austin's first 300 settlers into TX. @ 1830. They were in Sebastian Co. Ark. before that. They intermarried with my Trammell ancestors and I know about them back to 1650. They started in Stafford Co. VA then went to SC, received land grants in TN for fighting in Rev war. They were in the Cumberland Gap area. I have noticed that a lot of the counties they were in in different states were the same. Cumberland Va, Cumberland TN Gallatin Co in several states. I believe that Gallatin was probably the name of someone they knew or were associated with. It has also been helpful to link the family with famous people, such as Austin. Thomas and Amy returned from TX because of difficulties with the Spanish government. They couldn't get deeds to their claim. Had to 'agree' to be married by a priest, have their children baptized, etc. But there weren't enough priests and so sometimes a couple would have 2-3 children when they 'married'. A lot of people in Tn and Ark and other states moved during the civil war to avoid fighting. I don't know if this is the case with the Boatrights or not. I don't mean to avoid being in the war, but so their families would be safe. I know that the Trammells helped found Nashville (Nashboro) TN. I am hoping to find an earlier link with Trammells and Boatrights. Thomas and Amy took several Trammell orphans with them to Tx and Burke Trammell was killed at the Alamo. They were my 5th ggrandparents. Their daughter Patsy m Thomas Trammell. They both died young in Ark. I will keep your address and let you know what else I find out. Do you know what counties they were in in SC and GA? Sometimes you can learn a lot by looking up the history of the county. Happy hunting. Linda

    1. Re: [BOATRIGHT-L] Boatwright's in Ga. and S.C.
    2. Linda, I am having trouble with my South Carolina Boatwrights. I have a lot on them in Georgia, where they did get land from a land lottery. They moved from South Carolina to Washington County, Georgia about 1820. I have found documentation for the land lottery then. I also have them on several census in Georgia from 1829 on. I have found the wives family in ABBEVILLE, SC, were she was born. He possibly was near from the same area. I can't find any documentation of him in SC. I will tell you what I know. John BOATWRIGHT was born 1787 in SC, and died 1861 in Washington County Ga. He married Jane Oliver, daughter of James and Mary UNK Oliver. She was born 1799 ABBEVILLE, SC and died 1861 in Ga. They had children: James Thomas born July 2, 1828, died May 16, 1863, in the Civil War, in Miss. He married Rachel Joiner. He is my gggrandfather. Zelphia born 1819, died May 16, 1863, married James Layton. Permelia born 1823 George born 1827 Mary Jane born 1830 Zachey Ann born 1835 Susan Ann born 1839 John A. born 1856 (maybe grandson) I have lots of info from James Thomas till now. Do you have anything earlier than what I have or any places other than what I have? Sincerely, Diane BOATWRIGHT Amos
