    1. WOODS FAMILY URGENT!!
    2. Vernon Edenfield
    3. I am still searching for connections and information about the family of Mrs. Madison McDonal Boatright (1856-1932). She was born Mary Elizabeth Woods. There is an M.E. Woods in the 1860 census of Emanuel County in the household of Isaac Woods, whose wife was Susan, or Susannah. Her daughter wrote in a 1963 letter that "my grandfather must have died young because as far back as I can remember, my mother's mother was 'Grandmother Coleman'" Her husband, "Mac" (son of Reuben Boatright, Jr and Julia Sconyers), owned a turpentine still in lower Bulloch County, near Groveland at a place called "Magnolia Springs" (not the state park near Millen)........... Doesn't someone know anything about THE WOODS FAMILY???? Vernon Edenfield

    3. ANSWER: There IS no consistency. While 'wright' seems the older spelling, 'right' was found , too, even in the earliest periods...... My mother's branch of the GA family have been " BoatRight" since the 18th century. But two of her brothers, while in the military during WW II, had their surname changed to "BoatWright" by the government, probably the assumed spelling version of a clerk. But to this day, there are both R's and W's among one immediate members of a Boat(?)ight family! Take your choice. W. 3. The history is there we two brothers that came to Virginia in the 1600 that decided to uniquely identify their individual family on brother agreed to drop the "W" from his name. All Boatright and Boatwright are related and come together under the Name Boatwright (builder of Boats/ships) -----Original Message----- From: WHAWJA@aol.com [mailto:WHAWJA@aol.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 15, 2006 11:27 PM To: BOATRIGHT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BOATRIGHT-L] Re: Does anyone know when or why we dropped the "w"? 3. You are correct. For the most part, there was no rhyme or reason. The one possible exception to that which I am aware of is the everyone from census takers to county court officials seemed to have spelled the name as they saw fit. In some cases, but certainly not all, the families merely acquiesced to the way their names were being "officially" spelled. 1. Re: [BOATRIGHT-L] Re: Does anyone know when or why we dropped the "w"?
    2. I think a better explanation for the missing "W" would be because many people so long ago couldn't spell. Many people would sign their own name with an "X". As these people would go to a lawyer to have a will drawn up, it was often left up to the lawyer as to the spelling of the name. Some would maybe use the W, while others might not, This is just one theory however.

They did stay in Wayne County, this is where my mother and her siblings grew up with the exception of living in California during the "Grapes of Wrath" days. Yes, they moved out west for a while in search of jobs picking peaches and olives. My mother's parents were Richard Elmer Foster and Mahala Ann (Boatwright) Foster. James E. was killed on the 4th of July in 1904. He was shot in the chest by a man with the last name "Mcaffee", I am not sure the spelling, but this is what my grandma told my mom. No one knows why he shot him and I can't find any other info. My mother's grandma remaried, his name was Mr. Gentles, but she didn't know his first name. My grandfather died before I was born and my grandma died when I was 7, and my mom has a poor memory, so I am trying to get as much family history together as I can. Thanks for the info.

    3. Nancy! Did your grandfather,Dan Boatright, go to Hawhammock Church? If so, then HE is one of the two very elderly gentlemen I 'interviewed' in 1970!!! What year did he die? My old notes say "The following are from my long talk with Mr. Dan Boatright....date 1970"..... What I never see mentioned in genealogical sites is reference to ROADS, rivers, and other 18th and early l9th century routes of movement......I am very interested in that great Boatright portrait in Greenville, S.C. (a lady, ca 1820s)....and the ref to Elberton area, GA.......and Greenville is right on a main 18th century route from Virginia to GA I still think we will be able to figure out a LOT by comparing the movements and landholdings....and family given names....of Margaret's father, Kindred Braswell....... I haven't told you yet but my Grandmother Boatright had hanging on the wall of her bedroom what was called "Reuben Boatright's fiddle (violin)"....very old and clearly 'homemade'.....then recently I fou nd a reference in a book about Bark Camp Church (where he went before Hawhammock was established) to a violin maker in that church..
