Otherwise, Marie wouldn't have been alerted to the transfers. It's nice that the board admin is alerted to the transfer, but the drawback is that it leaves the board admin with the task of deleting what I assume (never assume!) is an off-topic administrative post. 3. One could "assume" the administrative post gave the poster important information about the area concerned in the query so would not necessarily be administrivia to be removed. One help to avoiding a bunch of posts to GENERAL boards would be for the powers that be to restore the board information pages. Mine had information about areas/counties of a state or province to help posters select the correct area. I've noticed an upswing in needing to move posts from general to area boards since that information was wiped out. The loss of board information is darned disrespectful of us volunteers. 3. Lynne, > Did you mean that you posted replies after you moved the posts? Not quite sure. I guess sometimes I posted a reply before moving, and sometimes also afterwards. My aim was to alert the original poster, not people on the destination board. It seems that I better should reply after moving. As to creating offtopic posts or not - most of the times my reply isn't just "...your post has been moved", but an explanation about why + how modern Austria is quite different than the Austrian empire of before 1918. This may look OT eg. for the Poland board, but at least it's genealogically relevant information, which the majority of researchers hasn't a clue of (just my personal experience). It's true, that in the past I've often sent messages to the 'General' boards, for instance Poland General. Reason being that I'm not really knowledgeable with Polish provinces (they have even changed boundaries not so long ago, I think). I would need a detailed map or a good gazeteer in order to make a better decision. And then - more often than not, people just have a place name that does apply to several different locations, when looked up in ShtetlSeeker. No way for me to decide which province/district would fit then.
