Personally I would delete the entire thread. Had the original post simply been a statement of the change of hours, I'd leave that one but delete the rest. The point of the original post was to vent his/her anger. Brynne On Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 1:36 PM, <LouMKing@aol.com> wrote: > I'm the Board Admin. for Newport Co. RI. The library part is genealogy related. Politics and taxes are not. Don- Yes---but when we consider that the boards are for genealogical queries and data related to the subject matter of the specific board, that puts a slightly different light on the situation. The post wasn't a query nor did it fit into the data types acceptable on the boards. The sole purpose of posting the message was to incite readers to action and elicit responses which soon became clearly inappropriate for the board. Joan In a message dated 6/23/2009 6:01:11 P.M. Hi Lou, I'd keep the 1st post and ditch the rest. I think it's perfectly okay to inform others of changes or problems that affect researchers. Several Lists have had short discussions (3 to 5 posts) of libraries' cut hours... or the laws regarding cemetery upkeep.... and laws about crossing private land to get to a cemetery on the private land. I don't think it hurts to have the information post. But when replies are just things like "How can they do that! It's our President/ Governor / the nasty powers that be who run our country into the ground... blah blah blah..." then I hit the delete button. As an aside, MANY community library systems are facing huge cuts in 2009-10. It IS a big issue for genealogists. Ohio wants a 50% cut in library funding--yikes. Lou- Were it my board, I'd remove the entire thread. That type of post serves no purpose but to advertise a political point of view--our boards are not the place for such discussion even if the matter IS or importance to genealogists. I recently went through a similar thread about danger to an old cemetery and preserving it. That post was less informative as it was a political call to action. The objection should include the email address of the person filing the objection. Drop the person an email and ask if they are the original poster of that message. If they reply that they ARE and you have no reason to doubt them...then delete the post for the poster. Joan In a message dated 6/15/2009 7:25:52 A.M. Are you possibly confusing boards with LISTS? List tools pages are where you can place the password in the URL to access your list tools. Boards have a cookie set to log you in as admin -- and if you've lost the cookie you need to manaully log into your admin account. Joan In a message dated 6/13/2009 10:38:37 A.M. I'm not have any problems. Could it be a cookie thing? Don't you need to have your computer set to accept cookies? J. I'm confused because my password is not in the URL on any of the boards I administer. Ian, Gatewayed messages (from the board to the list) always come from the address: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com And they always begin with the statement: This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. This particular piece of spam was NOT sent to the *list* itself, but to the administrator of the list (rosenberg-admin@rootsweb.com). Spammers probably harvested it from http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/r/rosenburg.html#ROSENBURG Mailing list addresses do not contain "-admin". It's coming to your admin address because you're the admin. RW wants you to decide if it's spam or not. If it is, tic the little box that says DISCARD all Pending, and then click SUBMIT. It's why you get the big-bucks as admin. ;) Cheryl
Ian- I looked at the ROSENBERG list archives for any spam that came through the gateway and I don't see anything there. The email you sent to this list earlier didn't show anything that would indicate the spam came through the gateway. Joan In a message dated 6/12/2009 6:44:57 P.M. I could put the Board on Moderation but that does no good as Rootsweb blocks the message being posted anyways from the gateway. I could filter the bounce address direct to trash at my end but thats improper as I need to see the messages. So..... if they get filtered by Rootsweb to not get from Board to List do they not have anyway of running this type of message through a spam filter before sending it to me? They only started last month but there are too many of them. Ian Singer

Ian, There is no way to stop it as long as you are a list admin.
