    3. I'm the same as Joan. Mostly go through My Alerts on the site. But I do like to look over the e-mail copy. Rick B ----- Original Message ----- From: JYoung6180@aol.com To: boards-admins@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, November 21, 2009 11:48 AM Subject: Re: [BAd] Message Board Notifications You know, I never notice if I'm getting these or not until someone else mentions it because I use My Alerts only from the boards--I don't rely on the email notices. A few times every day I go to the boards and click on My Alerts and start from the top and work down until I've revieved all the new messages posted since I last checked. I find that far easier than using the links in the emails. But...since the subject has come up: the last My Alerts email I received was the 18th of Nov. Joan

    2. It is SO much easier to follow them that way even if mail alerts ARE working. That is especially true for people using AOL mail, of course, because the links in the emails are not clickable. However, going board to board down the online list of Alerts, everything is clickable. It's even usually updated in time so that I don't even have to access boards where staff has already deleted spam. The only warning I'd give is to be SURE all boards you admin and any others you are interested in following (Boards Admins for example) are included in My Alerts. 3. What you can do is reply to the misplaced post with a link back to the appropriate post. You can write something like, "For the benefit of newbies or those not familiar with board navigation the original thread may be found here: (insert the link)" On Thu, Nov 19, 2009 at 3:27 PM, Mo! 3. On a couple of my boards There have been new posts (in a new thread) that are really replies. These new posts are on-topic and on-point; so on-point, in fact, that they are totally meaningless as stand-alones. I've written to the authors (through the WONDERFUL ancestry.com mechanism), requesting that they repost as a reply in the thread, but have not heard back. Would it be OK for me to do it for them, noting, of course, that I was posting on their behalf(s), and then delete the originals? or? Slán, Mo! IBSSG -- <http://xri.net/=mobang>

    3. Joan: In the event that the "new" board admin does not subscribe to this list, might I suggest you "report abuse" so that your note will appear in the objection queue for that board? It is more likely to be seen there, than here. 3. Hi, Tis not me but... Couldn't this have to do with Rootsweb "loosing" all the Admin pages for so long, then (finally) re-inserting them? Is it possible the Rootsweb server had some "old" Admin info for some boards and RW re-inserted info as it had up to a certain date? I mean, the Admin pages were "gone" a long, long time. If someone adopted a board during this time, there was no way to "edit" the Admin page (cos it wasn't really there for anyone to edit---mine stayed blank a long time).... and then, when RW "restored" the info it was the OLD info. So I doubt anyone meant to be a "False Board Admin" deliberately. I wonder what the last date on RW's file was? Anyone know? We should all probably go check every Board we have just to see if it is our own E-mail address there. I only checked some of mine. Finding that those were okay, I never checked the rest because I assumed "everything" was back to normal. All message board posts that are relevant to your list can simply be released and any off topic or spammy posts can be deleted before they hit the list. Easy peasy. :-) Lynne

    1. Re: [BAd] Our spammer is back
    2. Kathie IS right about not contacting a spammer but our BOARD spammers are not your garden variety run of the mill mass spammers. I doubt that contacting a board spammer would cause you any problems and, in the unlikely situation where a person is merely oblivious that their mass posts ARE spam, it might do some good. At the very worst it will just fall on deaf ears. Joan In a message dated 11/5/2009 11:57:42 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, decann@infionline.net writes: Nan, Kathie is right, you should NEVER writer directly to a spammer and/or click on any links or attachments in spam. Doing so will only give them another confirmed address to send their stuff to and, well, will only add to the spam that is likely already coming into your spam filters or inbox. Since this is spam on the boards, the only real option to us is to report it via the "Report Abuse" links on the boards so RootsWeb can remove them and the board account it was posted from. :-( David E.
