    3. I believe this to be a CYA statement so that ancestry is protected in the event that someone posts personal information on a message board and that message is not discovered, or is overlooked by an admin, or for boards that have no admins. I think we as admins need to follow the Community Guidelines regarding identifiable information on the living. I just removed a post made by a guy who posted the address of his living elderly parents, and that of his siblings on a rather busy board. I emailed him and explained why the post was removed and pointed him to the Community Guidelines. I would not even think about referring him to this privacy statement. 3. No, I don't think that's correct. Ancestry's privacy statement is for all subscribers to and users of Ancestry's web pages, but is not a guide for board admins and is not mentioned in the Board Administration Guidelines. If an objection is about a living person's information included in a post, Board Administration Guidelines should be followed, which state: > Read and enforce the Community Guidelines as they apply to boards and > delete any posts that are found to be in violation. and Community Guidelines state: > Don't include identifiable information about living people without > their direct consent, or, in the case of minors, the consent of their > parent or guardian. This includes (but is not limited to) a person's > full name, location or contact information. If a board admin isn't confident that a post should be removed or not, asking fellow board admins for advice or asking staff is the way to go. I would not refer an objector to Ancestry's privacy statement. Happy New Year to all! Lynne J.A. Florian wrote: >I was going through Ancestry's profile etc today. So, an alternative reading of the Anceztry statement could be: Posts ... MIGHT include information on the living. This doesn't indicate that it's permissible, just that it might occur. For the rest, see the community guidelines, as others have suggested. Bob > > > So, if someone cpmplains about a post containing "living persons" > information, send them to the link above. 3. I was going through Ancestry's profile etc today. I found this and thought other Admins might want to save it in case posters complain about info on "living persons" being included in posts. Note the word *may*. And, it does NOT say that Admins must remove it. >From http://www.ancestry.com/legal/privacy.aspx Privacy Statement This Privacy Statement was last updated on July 15, 2009. If you have not reviewed it since that date, please do so. You will not receive any other notice of changes to this statement. (sub-title) When do you distribute or publish information on the living on your Websites? Posts contributed by our members to message boards and other community areas may include information on the living. (end of Ancestry) So, if someone cpmplains about a post containing "living persons" information, send them to the link above. Especially for those posts that are "fine line" between "do I keep or do I delete?" Judy

Nobody is forcing them to contact the guy. I don't see why we, as Board Admins. need to protect people from posts like this. If they don't want to buy a book from him, then don't. And some people just like to have something to complain about. If he's doing it in an underhanded way, then I think all the posts from that guy who claims to have information from the State Dept. on the death of some person abroad should have his posts deleted too, but staff has always allowed them. When you email him, he charges a fee too, and the information is available for free at some government web site....(can't remember which one). IMHO, if one type of post like this is allowed, then both should be allowed -- if one is banned then both should be banned. Lou

    2. I always have avast Web Shield and Virus protection running in the background when I'm online so it popped up a warning to move the Trojan to the Virus Chest. In the meantime I ran a virus scan and my computer was clean. I didn't get any warnings for any websites other than AOL so I don't think it was my computer but a problem with AOL. Since they've broken away from Time Warner, perhaps they're doing some new programming and something went wrong somewhere. It seems to me that it was a script problem since the warning said it was a JS:ScriptIP-inf. Whatever happened, it disappeared about 30 minutes after I emailed the list. Thanks all. After about 30 minutes I tried to log on to AOL through their software and my IE connection again, and I didn't get any more warnings. Did anyone else have this problem? Now, however, when I try to log into my boards through rootsweb.com it won't recognize my Username & password. Help anyone?

    2. Marilyn- It would help to know whether you are using AOL's McAfee or another A/V program. Joan In a message dated 12/27/2009 1:30:53 P.M. 3. Marilyn, If you are using AOL version 9.6 along with AVAST, that may be the source of your problem. Apparently there is an update to AVAST which may help if you are using both of these items. -- Mary loumking@aol.com wrote: > This morning when I opened my AOL software and logged in, I kept getting a > warning from my virus program that there was a trojan file named > JS:ScriptIP-inf > > This happened even when I tried to open email or go to any AOL link. 2. Kathie- I don't know how long it has been since you used AOL's anti-virus program but it's the SAME McAfee suite (complete with firewall, spyware, etc. protection) that you would be getting if you purchased McAfee as a stand-alone program or used the McAfee suite offered by Comcast. It was top-rated by Consumer Reports this year. So the fact that there is possibly a virus or other malware on someone's computer isn't necessarily indicative of poor anti-virus software--in fact it sounds as if the anti-virus software is doing what it is supposed to do and alerting to the fact that something might be there that shouldn't be to block it. My AOL McAfee is updating right now as I'm typing and I didn't get any such alerts signing onto AOL or elsewhere. So the source of any potential infection doesn't necessarily have anything to do with AOL or the boards or any site you might be on when you get an alert and also isn't necessarily indicative of bad protection. 3. Joan --- McAfee is an inferior antivirus program. My folks here used it but got viruses on their computer anyway. I have used NOD32 for the past 3 years as recommended by a 30 yr. computer programmer. This software is rated at No.1 today by all the computer magazines and gurus. AOL has gone downhill on EVERYTHING for the past 5 years now. JMHO -- -- Take care, ~Kathie Harrison Ancestral Whispers http://whispers.ancestralwhispers.com/

    3. Since the person is asking for a response I would probably do so but I would tell them that private communications are beyond the control of any board admin. You may also advise them to contact the help desk with any other concerns that they may have. J. 3. Here's how I'd answer IF I choose to respond at all. Dear (Name of Objector), I have reviewed the objection you posted on (date) to the post titled (subject line here). Communications via the Internet vary widely between the persons communicating to each other. Some families welcome contact; others do not. But the type, frequency, and depth of communications between two persons or families is strictly between the parties involved. As a Violunteer Board Administrator, it is not my job to oversee, influence, control, or direct the kinds of communications people choose to have regarding family, history, or genealogy, or any other topic. In fact, because it is private communication, it is an absolutely private matter. Many family researchers decide to look for one, two... or even five, ten, or however many "relatives" or "distant relatives" as they choose to gather more family information, contacts, etc. Again, this is not something that I, as a Board Volunteer, can or should interfere, intervene, or oversee. Board Administrators do not have the power or reason to question or attempt to interfere with contacts a person seeks or makes with any family member or other researcher. Instead, my role is to make sure posts are on topic for the particular board. In my review of the posts and thread, the person in question has not violated any board rules. Therefore, I cannot take any action on your objection. Sincerely, Volunteer Board Administrator for XXX Board On Mon, Dec 21, 2009 at 11:14 PM, Nancy <pelhamassociation@yahoo.com> wrote: > Quoted objection on one of my boards: I've replaced names: > > "I am not sure what is taking place in this posting. 3. Quoted objection on one of my boards: I've replaced names: "I am not sure what is taking place in this posting. I contacted a XXXX family member and was told that they are in touch, as of today, with the lady that this person is supposedly attempting to gather information for. The XXXX family member has been in touch with the older lady on a continuous basis over the years and feels there is no reason for YYYY YYYYYYY to be attempting to locate family to make contact with her great aunt as she suggests she is doing. I don't think it is any of my (as board admin) business nor any of the objector's business. What was HE doing contacting the XXXX family? I prefer to reject the objection and not correspond with the objector. But if you think I should contact the objector, is there anything else I should say beyond it's none of our business?
