    2. Thanks for the opinions everyone, I realize now that it needs to stay but it took me by surprise since I've never had a posting about the genealogy of a famous criminal before. My initial reaction was ....who cares?--the guy is a murderer....but I suppose it matters to somebody out there. Marilyn

    1. Notifications through Ancestry? How to change that...
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BF.2ADIAE/1191 Message Board Post: I'm having problems with my notifications coming through Ancestry. Then, if I do have to edit the surnames or category, how do I switch to having administrator rights? Sometimes it's really hard to find that particular message again by searching through the Rootsweb side of the boards. Does this question even make sense? Roxanne

Personal feelings on it can't get in a way of someones tree. J.Kruger It doesn't even matter whether someone is related to him or not--genealogy is genealogy and WHO the info is about isn't as relevant as whether it is genealogy and whether it is on-topic for the board on which it was posted. And one thing about famous or INfamous people is that they give up the right to privacy when they commit crimes. So even data about the living where MANSON or other notorious figures is concerned would be permissible. Facts are facts and don't cast judgments. Joan

    3. Hi, I looked, Yes it is genealogy as it is telling researchers about how England look ups may be in a different area then what the code seems.. It could have been worded much better by an explanation of what the person was trying to explain.. My opinion Nelda Nelda's websites - http://freepages.folklore.rootsweb.com/~bonsteinandgilpin/ yDNA tests for Hurst, Beatty, Gilpin; all male relatives

I don't. ----------------------- Marilyn, Whether or not you or I want a message about someone notorious on a board under our admin is irrelevant. The question you should be asking is whether or not it is on topic. If there is a clear connection to the board topic, and there is in this case, then it is on topic and should stay. Like it or not, Charles Manson seems to have been born in Hamilton County, Ohio. The boards are not there for us to "tidy up" history to our particular liking. They are there for researchers to help one another. Even the most notorious have family that want to trace their lineage. We, as board admins, should not be creating stumbling blocks just because one of their family tree branches isn't to our liking. Sharon Dulcich

I don't. Opinions please? Thanks in advance, Marilyn ------------ Marilyn, what board and what was the message content. Just because you find it offensive because it is about the ancestry of Charles Manson, does not mean it is not allowed on the boards. The link showed absolutely NOTHING offensive. If iy is off topic for YOUR county then move it to the appropriate county/state board or the MANSON surname board, but you can't delete it just because you personally take offense to the message. I would not remove a post about Charlie STARKWEATHER from my Lancaster County, Nebraska board just because he ALSO was a mass murderer. It is historic, pertinent to my county and of interest to many. We can't pick and choose what is posted to the boards simply because the admin finds it offensive when it clearly may not be to many who read these boards. The actual ancestry is NOT on the board, just a link. Regardless, criminals, even infamous serial killers, have ancestry. >I don't. It has to stay because what an admin wants isn't pertinent. Sometimes, we get in the mind frame of thinking of the boards as "my message boards", when we are simply caretakers not owners.... Jackie

That's a normal frame of reference for each of us. But, you just have to look at how many people belong to the Black Sheep genealogy group to realize that many have turned to other genealogists as a way of working out issues with their black sheep or of trying to understand family-of-origin issues. Others collect genealogy information about criminals as a sociological study of family issues. So, as long as the genealogy of a criminal is available and placed on the best possible board, it belongs. If they were from Oklahoma, feel free to post them to my board: Boards > Topics > Crime (old west, outlaws, prisoners, police, etc.) > OK Lawmen Outlaw. Famous outlaws are a hot topic when they havew been dead for 100 years. So it will be for today's famous criminals. Regards, Sharyn

Janet Hi Janet The posts you mention seem like a natural progression from the original message, so I would just fix the surname box in Dave's reply and leave the posts where they are. I usually only move replies if they are waaaaay off the original subject. Most of the time that happens when someone mistakenly posts a message as a reply rather than as a new message. Hope that helps a little. Best wishes, Lynne

It comes off a regular posting but the subject changed to a different surname. Should this be kept attached to this original post or should it be moved to the correct surname board. in the the first post (addy above) it does mention the Campbell surname but not in a search quest just more as a mention but in the reply it doesnt mention it at all. I just want to see what you all think. Janet

Thanks again... Johan Johan- I think you might have been thinking about the creation of new LISTS rather than new BOARDS. There has been a temporary halt to creating new lists until the lists are migrated over to a new system but nothing has been said about any halt to board creation. Joan
