    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BF.2ADIAE/1194 Message Board Post: I've had a heck of a time today getting around the boards. It is taking forever for pages to open and it took several minutes for a page to respond after clicking submit to fix an surname box. Couple of times it never did respond I just gave up after clicking submit and walking away from the computer for several minutes and the page never did refresh. It took a couple of minutes for a page to open from a gatewayed message. Yeah, I know no one can really answer my question, but am I alone here? Is this a "me" problem or a "them" problem? I cleaned out all of my catches, defrag my computer, even called my ISP so I am frustrated.

Ok--I just saw the notice on the boards and it says they will be down "for a few hours" on Aug. 10th. I'll be literally amazed if the transfer of ALL that data takes only a few hours. But we must have faith and hope! Joan

I guess we don't have lives or need to plan or need to be informed volunteers. I guess the main question I'd like answered is how long the boards will be down. I know how this worked the last time there were major changes in the boards. How it generally works is that the boards have to be shut down so that there won't be any changes made to them (under the old system) and then a "data dump" is done to move all the posts over to the new system and once that massive transfer takes place and any major migration bugs are swatted the new boards are open for use. The last time this was done in late June 2001 the boards were down for more than a week while all the data was transferred and things were put in order. So I think we need to know a specific time when the boards will go down and a rough estimate for when the new system will be up and running--plus we need information on the use of the new admin tools so we'll be ready when the new boards are up and running. Also we'll need information on the functionality of the new boards so we can attempt to educate board users. I'm quite sure the functionality is very different from the current system so there will be a learning curve. Joan

    3. If it were on a surname list I would move it to a location list. However, it is appropriately placed on a location list and is information regarding the location. I believe it is certainly acceptable in that aspect. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BF.2ADIAE/1191.1 Message Board Post: It is quite easy to change to admin tools. What I usually do is click on the link to see if I need to change anything or not. If I do, I simply go up to the URL and add "admin." right before /msg in the URL. Say the URL was your post, http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BF.2ADIAE/1191 I would make it into: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/admin.msg/rw/BF.2ADIAE/1191 Also, if you had posted from the Ancestry side, your URL would have a /an/ instead of /rw/ in it. Since I prefer editing (and reading) in the Rootsweb side, I would leave that part alone when changing the URL. However, if the person had posted from the Ancestry side, I would change /an/ to /rw/ for my own convenience. Alternatively, you can click the link, log in, and then click the Admin link rather than editing the URL. That will not change the /rw/ /an/ part, however. I find the Notifications perfectly useful. I always check for new posts, though, just in case a Notification went missing. I check both threaded and by date, so I don't miss anything. I hope this helps, Valorie

    3. Roxanne, I don't have time to go to the boards right now to reply there, so am replying directly to you with a copy to the list. I can help you solve both of your problems all at once. Whenever you get a notification, or a gatewayed post coming through your list, don't click on it. Instead, copy it and paste it into your browser but don't hit enter. Next, change /an/ to /rw/ to get to the Rootsweb interface, and change /msg/ to /admin.msg/ to get to the Administrator view. Once the URL has been altered, hit enter, and you'll be taken to the page that wants your username and password, and then to that message on your board in admin mode with the Rootsweb interface. As an example, take the URL in this gatewayed message: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BF.2ADIAE/1191 If it had been http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BF.2ADIAE/1191 it would bring up the Ancestry interface. So assuming it comes in as -- http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BF.2ADIAE/1191 You would change it to -- http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/admin.msg/rw/BF.2ADIAE/1191 ...and then you would hit enter. Of course the link above will only work for the board admin for the board on which you posted your message. I do this link editing all the time...anytime I want to get to a message that I need to edit for the surname line, etc. -- Mary On Thu, 3 Aug 2006 rmunns@uwalumni.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BF.2ADIAE/1191 > > Message Board Post: > > I'm having problems with my notifications coming through Ancestry. > Then, if I do have to edit the surnames or category, how do I switch to > having administrator rights?
